Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated October 21 – October 28, 2007
(Number 42)

Dear Fishing Friends:

We had a furious wind storm Tuesday night causing downed trees and power outages but did not affect the rivers very much. Winds calmed down by Wednesday morning. As of today river conditions are good. The Skeena has been dropping and is clean enough to fish. The Kalum is dropping and is clean and fishable although a bit high. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is dropping and is now fishable. Fishing for both Steelhead and Coho is excellent using both spin and fly rods. Coho fishing closes on October 31 so get out there and enjoy the last few days.

There were New wildlife and river scenic photos posted on October 24. To view please cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm

If any of you have special fishing photos, scenic river photos or wildlife photos I would love to see them. Scroll below for a couple of “guest” fishing photos.

NOTICE Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to view open dates for the guides and lodges. Their seasons are running short and there are not many open dates left.

NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer and review the latest updates regarding last minute openings. Contact me for all the details and to book. These dates are updated on the website whenever there is a change.

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Salmon forecast for 2007: Chinook look very good for the Skeena and Kitimat systems; Coho are good to excellent; Pink expect a reasonably good run; Sockeye returns to the Skeena are expected to be good this year; Chum average return.

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Coho in the river.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena is fishable. The Kitimat and Kalum Rivers are in fishable shape. Other Skeena tribs towards Prince Rupert are also in fishable shape.

KITIMAT RIVER:

SKEENA RIVER: The River colour is a little off but still fishable. Both Steelhead and Coho can still be caught. The main stem is the “highway” for Salmon and Steelhead heading to their many different tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: The water is in good shape both top and bottom and is fishing good for both Steelhead and Coho. It is possible to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day although each species requires specific location and technique.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

KASIKS RIVER: Coho are the target fish. Most fish have already moved to the top pools as the water has been high. Our record fish was a 27-pounder.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Coho are in the whole river now. The fish are starting to hold in deep pools and runs on the upper end. Sometimes they go so high they cannot be reached by jet boat. Heli fishing is the only way to go then.

EXSTEW RIVER: Coho are in the river now. This is a difficult river to fish because the water is a dark green colour.

Think about hiring an experienced jet boat fishing guide for the above three rivers for fall Coho (Silver) Salmon. It will change your life…believe me!

GITNADOIX RIVER: The Coho are throughout the whole river and may be into the lake by now. Access to this river is very difficult. Experienced jet boat operators only please.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER:

The river has come back into fishable shape since mid week. There seems to be a good run of Steelhead in the river. Lots of Coho are being caught in certain areas but they may not be targeted and must be released back into the river.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho have moved a long way upriver searching for their spawning gravel.

ISHKHEENICKH RIVER: This is a fantastic river for Coho this time of year. The water needs to be rising and falling to keep the fish moving up river.

MEZIADIN RIVER: Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day plus numerous local trout and Dolly Varden char. To clarify: Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon are only allowed at the very low end of the river below the boundary sign (you are actually fishing the clean seam of the Meziadin River in the Nass River). Trout fishing is available throughout the whole river and lake. Please check the fishing regulations.

The fall colours in the Nass and trib region are absolutely beautiful this time of year. Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm view some of the scenic photos.

In addition to scenic photos cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm to watch a few video clips from the beautiful Nass River system.

CRANBERRY RIVER: Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day. Access to this river is not very good.

TSEAX RIVER: Has a late run of Chinook. The fish should be throughout the whole river. I have a report of good numbers of Chinook landed in the lower end down near the mouth. Coho should be right behind the Chinook or even mixed in with them.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are in now.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho are in now.

Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of October 21 to 27, 2007

Fishing conditions during the last week are a familiar one for this time of year. There are good numbers of Steelhead in Skeena River tributaries, but late fall rains have elevated river levels to less than ideal conditions. Still, those willing to wait out the rains can have some of the best and most exciting fishing of the year. Moreover, a lot of the fair weather fisher crowds are now gone, so access to the best pools and finding solitude with just yourself, the river and the fish is a little easier.

We are also into the last few days of our late fall Coho season. While there are some fresh Coho entering Skeena tribs, the majority of fish have been in the river for some time and are now actively spawning. Because of the spawning activities of the Coho, the trout and char fishing can be outstanding at this time of year, and it seems as though they are much healthier than last year, likely due to a robust run of Pink Salmon this season.

We are now into full swing in booking for next year, and look forward to another successful year in 2008. If you are interested in joining us here at the lodge for any of our 2008 packages, such as Spring Steelhead, Trophy Chinook, Steelhead and All Species of Pacific Salmon, Fall Steelhead and Trophy Coho to name a few, please inquire with Noel today. Prime time spaces are in high demand and fill up fast, so booking early is essential.

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: The days are getting shorter, the mornings are getting colder and the snow on the mountains creeps lower and lower. The signs of season change are apparent. In fact, this time of the year we can experience all four seasons in the same day.

Although the number of fishable days have been limited by the weather there are plenty of cutthroat trout in the Kitimat River available to fish for. Anglers are reminded that Coho retention on the Kitimat River closes on October 31st.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Most boaters are either winterizing their boats or putting them away for the winter. Some boaters leave their boats in the water to take advantage of the winter springs.
The weather this week has not been suitable for fishing as we experienced some really nasty winds.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Central Coast/North Van Island Wilderness Rivers:

DFO Salmon forecast for 2007: Coho return is expected to be normal; Chinook were at or above average, so good fishing is anticipated; Chum are always strong; Pink returns are expected to be normal, which means very plentiful; Sockeye is not expected to be high.

Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort

At the end of our season this year even Mrs. Murray, Craig's wife got to play. One of several nice Coho that Deborah caught this day puts the smile on her face. It's not all work.

2008 is building into a great season. It is an even year with good runs predicted. Our Steelhead starts in the spring, April 17th, and this year we are dong a couple of summer steelhead trips as well. Contact Noel to book.

Now it is time to lean new tunes on the guitar, jam with friends, market for 2008 and beyond and get the gear ready once again for the upcoming season.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated October 7 – October 14, 2007
(Number 40)

Dear Fishing Friends:

Water is fishable on some of the rivers. We are lucky to have so many different rivers to fish. One gets blown we just move to another. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is blown out today. The Skeena is still fishable even after all the rain we have had. Late fall Coho should still be coming in. Steelhead, at least the true summer-runs, are in their home rivers now. Fall and winter runs bound for the Kalum River are still coming in. Tomorrow, October 15 is the last day for guiding on this river. If you know where the Coho are holding in the Kitimat River they can still be caught. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.

I get my fishing reports from many sources but I would like to mention one I got yesterday from Bill Kiser of Portland, Oregon. Bill has been coming back for guided trips with me and now the Nicholas Dean Lodge since 2000. Bill went home yesterday after his week of fishing and told me he had great success on all the rivers he fished for both Steelhead and Coho. He said his guide Gregg Buck took very good care of him and put him onto fish everyday. See you next year Bill.

Out of curiosity I was looking back at some of my past guiding records and note that fishing on the lower Skeena River October 15, 1999 was fabulous. We fished for eight hours using conventional tackle. (Barry and Brian) hooked 45 fish, landed 33 of which 21 were Coho, 7 Steelhead and 5 Pinks. On October 16 (Jack and Diane) hooked 44 fish, landed 31 of which 18 were Coho, 13 Steelhead and 2 Pinks. My question is… shouldn’t we expect this kind of action even today? I say…YES…and if not we have to do a better job managing our fishery. I think we have our work cut out.

I have some wonderful fishing photos this week, anyone of them could have been the photo of the week.

Photo of the week more detail (from e-mail string):

E-MAIL: TO: Gary Dickenson FROM: Noel Gyger

Hi Gary, thank you for the photos. Nice fish! The following are the formulas I have used for years:

CATCH & RELEASE FORMULAS:

Chinook: girth squared x length x 1.54 divided by 1000 (inches)

Steelhead: girth squared x length x 1.33 divided by 1000 (inches)

If your Steelhead had a girth of 25 inches the weight could be estimated (25 x 25 x 45 x 1.33 divided by 1000) at 37.40-pounds.

That is one BIG Steelhead. Thanks. Noel

E-MAIL: TO: Noel Gyger FROM: Gary Dickenson

Noel: You confirmed what I was thinking about the size of that steelhead. Could this actually be the fly-caught record for the Copper River? (If not, that is fine with me, but I would at least like an estimate of the weight for my story-telling purposes.) I saw the photos of the records of 30 and 32 pounds on your website, and my fish looks bigger than both of those fish. That's why I sent you my photos. I thought you would be interested.

I have many photos of the fish, and from different angles, so I think a good estimation of the girth can be determined based on the photos. The length measurement of 45 inches is accurate. Actually, the first rough measurement was 45-1/2' inches, but several re-measurements put it at 45 inches.

You can use the photos in your report. Here's the information on our day.

Fish caught by: Gary Dickenson, Santa Rosa, California
Date: October 6, 2007
River: Copper River, lower portion below confluence with Clore River
Photos taken by: John Rusmisel
Length: 45 inches; tip of nose to tip of tail
Girth: Not measured, (I'll let you estimate the girth)
Gear: Fly fishing; 9.5' 8wt Sage EP single-handed fly rod, Bauer LM3 reel, Rio Type 3 shooting head line, Maxima 15 lb test leader.
Fly: #6 purple egg-sucking leech.

Report: The big steelhead took a little over 20 minutes to land. Jumped completely out of the water on four different occasions. It was awesome to see. For the day, we (John and myself) had 7 hook-ups, with three steelhead and one dolly landed. The steelhead were approximately 8 lb, 12 lb, and 37 lb (?); the dolly was 16'. .

So, do think this fish has any chance at being a record for the Copper River? I have no experience with a fish of this size, so I leave the size estimate to the big fish experts such as yourself. Show the photos around to other guides and see what the consensus is. I am going to try to get a good estimate of the girth base on all my photos. If you want to see more photos of the fish, I'd be happy to send them to you.

Thank you for your response.

Best Regards,

Gary Dickenson

Fishing Report for the Week of October 7 to 13, 2007

Andrew Fairclough poses with one of his 5 Steelhead landed in one day on a Skeena River Tributary. This fish was estimated to weigh around 16-pounds. Photo credit: Stuart Forsyth

This week at Nicholas Dean Lodge saw a number of anglers from the UK coming over to sample some of the great Steelhead fishing available here. And great it was. On their second day of fishing, Andrew Fairclough and Stuart Forsyth hooked 10 fish and landed 7, the largest around 18 lbs. These fish were fresh chrome, and only a few days from the Ocean. Peter McLeod, one of our newest booking agents, also attended the lodge with the renowned photographer and tv personality, Henry Gilbey. Though Coho fishing was slow for their first couple of days, their third and final day proved to be the winner. Peter landed an 18 lb Steelhead, and his client, Michael Joynson, landed three Steelhead, one of which was 18 lbs and the other a trophy at 20! Needless to say, I can’t wait to see some of Henry’s photos.

Long time Nicholas Dean guest Bill Kiser fished with one of our top guides, Greg Buck, and landed upwards of 5 Steelhead every day and several Coho. Finally, congratulations go out to Elizabeth Salisbury for landing her first Steelhead on the fly, and to Godfrey Butler, for a great 14 lb Skeena Coho.

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER (October 11 “mid week” update): There have been reports of Coho (Silver) Salmon being caught in the upper Kitimat River especially the first wash out area. The Coho that are being caught range in colour with the majority of them showing spawning colours. This is typical for the Kitimat River during this time of year. The river is fishable today but the river is rising with the recent rain that we are having. Cutthroat trout have been reported through the Kitimat River and is a great fishery if the river conditions remain decent. As usual this time of year we are totally reliant on the weather. Stay tuned.

KITIMAT RIVER (October 7 through October 14):

The fishing pressure on the Kitimat River slows down this time of year although there are still plenty of fishing opportunities to catch Coho or Cutthroat trout. The majority of the Coho will start to show spawning colors and fresh Coho will be fewer and fewer in numbers. Most of the Coho are being caught in the upper Kitimat with the Washout being the hotspot for this week. There have been reports of lots of bears on the upper Kitimat so anglers should beware to avoid confrontations. There have been sightings of both Black and Grizzly bears as they are fattening up for their winter hibernation so it is wise to be careful especially around dusk.

Cutthroat trout is a fishery that is growing in popularity as they are enhanced by the Kitimat Hatchery. Fly fishing is very productive. The most popular fly patterns are egg patterns or minnow patterns. My personal favorite is the muddier minnow with gold tinsel body. Small spoons and spinners are also effective but the most popular method is the float and worm rigs.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Trolling for Coho is finished for this year but trolling for winter springs should start anytime now. The timing of this feeder Chinook fishery is difficult to predict as the feeding Chinook follow baitfish up the Douglas Channel and into the Kitimat harbour.

Some years it is better fishing in October and November and other years it is better February and March. Crabbing and Bottom fishing is always an option but as previously reported totally reliant on the weather.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated September 30 – October 7, 2007
(Number 39)

Dear Fishing Friends:

I don’t usually start off the report with a photo but I thought this one is rather special as it is linked to the above photo of the week. Photo is courtesy of Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge.

Water is fishable on some of the rivers. The Skeena has been dropping all week but is on the rise today as the Zymoetz (Copper) River blew out because of heavy rain last night. Decent numbers of wild Steelhead and Coho are being caught now using both spin and fly fishing methods. Fishing is slowing down on the main stem Skeena as most fish are entering their home rivers now. We have had some rain (heavy Saturday night), typical for this time of year and most of it stayed in the mountains as snow.

Guides ventured north with their clients to fish the Nass and tributary rivers and the fishing was great. Steelhead and Coho were caught in all the rivers and in good numbers. The scenery this time of year is absolutely beautiful. Cast here http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm to view some of them. If any of you have scenic river photos or wildlife photos I would love to see them and post them on my site.

For a detailed report on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel read the Ron Wakita report and photos below. In addition, other guides have reports. See below.

Concerns were expressed by the local Sport Fishing Advisory Board (SFAB) in Terrace and Prince Rupert regarding the size of the Coho runs in the lower Skeena River tributary Rivers. A conference call was planned to discuss the situation but was cancelled when on October 2nd the DFO said, 'The coho situation on the lower Skeena appears to be improving. It appears that the runs are late and the most recent field information we have shows good numbers of bright fish are showing up. There is not allot of fishing effort but success is good in most areas where there is effort. Given this information we are not contemplating any management actions to the in-river sport fishery at this time. We will continue to monitor and hopefully get good aerial counts once the water clears up and the levels drop.'

SKEENA RIVER: The River has been dropping all week but has started to come up today. Coho are showing up in average numbers. Fly fishing and spin fishing for Steelhead is slowing down as most of the fish have moved through by now.

See photo below:

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Coho are in the whole river now. The water is a good height and clean. The fish are starting to hold in deep pools and runs on the upper end.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Water blew out last night from the heavy rains and is now NOT fishable.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides and should be dispersed through the whole river. With each high water the fish move further up the river.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are coming in now. More rain the better.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now with the higher tides.

Fishing Report from: Randy Marshall of Randy’s River Guiding

October 1 – 2 plus the rest of the week: Randy reports good success for his two clients fishing the lower Skeena tributaries for Coho. They landed five on October 1 and five on October 2 and lost a few. Jeff and Ernie are from England and enjoyed the fishing and really enjoyed the beautiful river scenery. Fishing on the main stem Skeena was slow. Fishing on the Kitimat was GREAT in the upper reaches with six Coho landed. Of special note, a “fresh” fish with sea lice still attached and a large “fire engine” red one with a big hook nose (this fish has been in the river for awhile). A drift in the lower end produced nothing. Maybe most of the fish have moved through with the high but clean water. Maybe a “bump” of new fish will come in? Once the fish get upstream of the Hwy 37 Bridge they are safe from anglers. To protect the spawning Coho, as per regulation, most rivers close to Coho fishing on October 31.

Fishing Report from: Dustin Kovacvich of Nicholas Dean Lodge

September 30 and October 1 -2: Dustin guided a group of three anglers from Ontario. Fishing for Steelhead and Coho was fantastic! They landed over 20 Steelhead plus numerous Coho. They were fishing the Ontario developed 'high-tech' balsa float fishing system with 14-foot noodle rods and free-spooling center-pin reels. The rods were actually modified 14 foot Spey fly fishing rods. They 'bumped up' their tippet strength to 12-pound test to handle our bigger fish. One of their favorite reels is the “Steelheader” by Island Reels of British Columbia.

Fishing Report from: Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge

Report for the Week of September 30 to October 6, 2007

It really is the proverbial Catch-22. The rivers, streams, and lakes of the Skeena region, the fish that reside in them and, in turn, anglers, are dependent on rain and cold water. However, it is these same rains that can and often do make the rivers rise and turn off fishing completely. Such is the case for fishing this week. The Steelhead fishing was very good early on in the week, as heavy rains elevated river levels and the corresponding drop in water height and improved clarity (that great Steelhead green stage) seemingly induced a bump of fish in the rivers, or at least made them more active. As the rivers continued to drop and clear though, the fishing began to taper off, for both Steelhead and Coho. Currently, as I write this, there have been major rains and the rivers have risen again, but this just means that the fishing will likely pick up when it starts to drop and clear again. More or less, it seems like everything else in life – it’s not good having too much or too little – somewhere in between is just perfect.

With this being said, the guests at our lodge experienced great fishing for Steelhead early last week. A number of anglers were using Spey rods to swim large, Intruder style flies through the holding water, and even a few were caught on a waking dry fly. Some of our guests were also using conventional float fishing gear and spoons, and were very successful. And surprisingly, one of our guests found that Coho can be quite receptive to a number 10 Prince nymph in shallow water conditions – not something that you’d expect! This is prime time for Steelhead when water conditions are right, as the rivers have received their Summer Run fish, and fall and early winter fish will continue to feed the building run. It is also the time for the “Northerns,” the big Coho of the Skeena and its tributaries, which are typically larger than the early run fish. If the Steelhead fishing is a little slow, don’t be afraid to try swinging or stripping a large fly through the “frog water,” as you might latch onto a chrome, hard fighting Coho…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

October 4 mid week update: Ron Wakita reports the Kitimat River fishing conditions remain volatile as the water level rises and falls with the fall rains. Although the river has not risen in height and that the river is not fishable, the fishing is far from ideal. Alex Nemeth guided Pat Butler who hooked six coho and landed only one on Sunday, September 30th. The river is dropping today and conditions should improve.

KITIMAT RIVER:

The Kitimat River has dropped and cleaned with the better weather and is producing Coho for anglers who venture out.

Pat Oliver an associate guide with Reliable Guides and his fishing partner Andi hooked five Coho and landed three on October 4th drifting the Kitimat in pontoon boats. Pat and Andi only did an afternoon drift and had a pretty good outing.

The angler effort on the Kitimat is minimal this time of year but there are plenty of Coho in the system. When the river conditions are good, Coho fishing can be exceptional. At this stage of the Coho season Coho can be found distinctly grouped in large schools. I discovered this when I had the amazing opportunities of being an observer during some helicopter flights over the Kitimat River with Department of Fisheries while they were doing fish counts. The flights were usually done in October and during low, clean river conditions. The most notable observation was that the Coho were stacked up in huge groups. From the air I could see up to two or three hundred Coho in one group. Even more amazing was that we would fly for sometimes two or three miles before seeing another group. This was the same situation on all the systems that we flew. The Dala, Kildala, Brim, Kemano, Chief Mathews, Wee Wananee, Kuntz as well as other rivers exhibited the same distinct grouping of Coho. The difference in the run timing of the specific systems was determined by where the Coho were grouped. If the Coho were observed in the lower sections, then Coho return on that system was in its early stages. If most of the Coho were observed in the upper sections then accordingly the run would be the later stages. These fly overs were an amazing experience and a huge lesson on how and why we fish for Coho the way we do.

When we drift a river for Coho we would fish a particular spot and catch a bunch and then drift for sometimes miles before fishing another hole. The trick is to find them and when you do, fish them hard because as observed from the air, there is usually a lot. Important to note that most of the Coho in the Kitimat are in the middle and upper sections of the river.

Anglers gather information from many sources to improve their ability to catch fish. I was fortunate to participate in the helicopter fly over which definitely increased my ability to find and catch fish so I thought I would share with the readers of this fishing report. Cheers!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

The Douglas Channel in the fall has plenty of opportunities for the sports anglers. Although the Coho trolling in the salt water is pretty much done, trolling for Winter Springs (feeder Chinook) should start soon. Crabbing and Prawning can be exceptional this time of year. Bottom Fishing is also good this time of year.

Todd of Nautical West Adventures fishing with his clients Corey,Stephen, Zak and Gerry from Edmonton landed six Halibut and twelve Grey Cod during an outing on Sunday September 30th.
The weather is an important issue this time of year so it is always good practice to get the marine weather report prior to going and monitor the marine weather channel during the outing.
Good Luck to all and Stay Safe!

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated September 23 – September 30, 2007
(Number 38)

Dear Fishing Friends:

We have survived the mid week heavy rain. Water conditions are good. Zymoetz (Copper) River and the Kalum are both clean as of Saturday, September 29th. Even though it is still raining off and on and heavy at times, most of the rain is staying in the mountains as snow. All the local mountains have received a fresh dusting of snow. Good numbers of Steelhead are still coming up the Skeena and the Coho run is peaking. It’s hard to find the Coho in the lower Skeena tribs as the water is high and the fish just keep on moving. You need an experienced guide and good jet boat to find them.

I’ve had many questions as to the size of this years wild Steelhead run on the Skeena River. Yesterday I spoke with a friend of mine who has been an angling guide for many years on the lower Skeena River and in his opinion the run is average. He also comments the Coho run seems to be average also. Depending on the water and weather conditions he had some great days with lots of action and then some days with very little action. He says this is normal. I really hope that our friends in the upper tributaries are getting enough fish now. Apparently that was not the case early on.

For a detailed report on the Kitimat River read the Ron Wakita report and photos below. In addition, other guides have reports. See below.

I was thrilled to receive the following e-mail and photos from Mike Donovan. ”Noel - I was out your way last week fishing the Kitimat River and the salt water. The coho fishing was spotty, good one day and moderate to poor the next. We had great halibut fishing down near Princess Royal Island but the high light of the trip was seeing a Kermodei bear on the north shore of Gribbell Island on Sept the 18th. I took ninety pictures of this young bear and towards the end we got within 20 yards of shore and the bear ignored us while I took more pictures. I’ve attached two pictures but have more if you are interested. Feel free to share the attached pictures. Thanks for your weekly update. Mike Donovan, Quispamsis, New Brunswick”

Drum roll please…the Kermodei Tourism web site is officially live online at www.kermodeitourism.ca. Welcome to Terrace BC, home of the Kermodei Bear. Situated in the heart of the spectacular Skeena Valley and Northwest BC’s Coast Mountains, Terrace is an exhilarating blend of outdoor adventure, spectacular wilderness, First Nations culture and warm hospitality. May I extend my personal congratulations for a great looking website.

SKEENA RIVER: The River came up but is still in fishable shape. Coho are showing up in average numbers. Fly fishing and spin fishing for Steelhead is good. The main stem is the “highway” for Salmon and Steelhead heading to their many different tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: is good for both Steelhead and Coho now on both top and bottom.

KASIKS RIVER: Coho are coming in fair numbers. Let us hope the run continues to build. I have good reports from guides both fly and spin fishing. Water is a good height now after the rain we had. Our records fish was a 27-pounder.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Coho are in the whole river now. The water is a good height and clean. The fish are starting to hold in deep pools and runs.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Good numbers of Steelhead are being caught. I have reports of some nice fish landed using both spin and fly. The water is in good shape. This is the time of year to try and get them to take a dry fly. As the temperature drops it is more difficult to get them to chase a dry fly.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides and should be dispersed through the whole river. With each high water the fish move further up the river.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are coming in now. More rain the better.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now with the higher tides.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge

Fishing Report for the Week of September 23 to 29, 2007

The fishing last week continued to improve, with water conditions being nearly ideal, at least for the first few days. Steelhead responded well to wet flies fished on either a dry line, or with heavier sink tips, depending on the pool and river. A few fish were even landed on dry flies – one of the ultimate experiences of fly fishing for Steelhead! However, mid week there were heavy rains that raised and muddied a lot of the rivers, and fishing did slow down a little. After the downpours though, there were cool, dry conditions, which helped the rivers come back into shape and the fishing has responded in suit.

Though we are always optimistic as anglers, the forecast for this week is supposed to be rain, showers, rain etc., so we are keeping our fingers crossed that the rivers stay in shape! Or, let’s just hope that the weatherman is wrong…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

KITIMAT RIVER:

This week was a prime example of how extreme the weather can affect the fishing conditions on the Kitimat River. Wednesday night September 26th it rained heavy all night. The Kitimat River rose 6 feet and was not fishable at all on Thursday. Friday the rain stopped and the river dropped 3 feet. It was cloudy with showers on Saturday morning and the Kitimat dropped another 2 feet and was fishable. Although conditions were still not ideal, I had the pleasure of drifting with Natalie McKelvey and her four year old son, Adon. We hooked five Coho and managed to land one about sixteen lbs.

Alex Nemeth guided John McCulloch from Scotland and they managed to hook three Coho and they also landed one. We both encountered other boaters that had similar results. There were also the odd Coho caught in the lower Kitimat by anglers fishing from shore. The Kitimat River this time of year should have Coho holding throughout the river system but the fishing conditions are restricting anglers to mediocre fish counts. This is the typical unpredictable nature of Coho fishing on the Kitimat during late September and October. There are good numbers of Coho in the river but we are totally reliant on Mother Nature providing good fishing conditions in order to catch them. When and if the conditions are good the fishing should be good. Stay Tuned.

Sorry, no report this week.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated September 16 – September 23, 2007
(Number 37)

Dear Fishing Friends:

I have recovered from my hard drive crash on Sept 11. Thank goodness I had my files backed up on disc. Lesson for all: Get in the habit of backing up your stuff on a regular basis!

Fishing is good on a variety of rivers. Steelhead and Coho are the only target fish now, unless you are interested in the Trout and Dolly Varden fishery (which by-the-way is good year round, river or lake) or fishing the central or northern wilderness coastal rivers. The Skeena River is in “fishable” condition. We’ve had some rain which in one way is a good thing as the waters were getting too low and the fish were not moving. Now they are. You decide what you want to target, Steelhead or Coho or would you like to try and catch both on the same day? Are you into fly fishing, spin fishing or both? It’s your call. The guides know all the techniques and are here to help you. Read more regarding each river below.

The photo above is the crew of Fish Bone Productions www.fishboneproductions.tv from Rome, Italy who were here in the northwest for eight days to shoot sport-fishing shows to air in Italy and Europe. In the photo (left to right) are Kuso, Carlo, Francesco and outdoor photographer and writer Antonio. They are also shooting shows in the lower mainland, Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlottes. Their plan is to produce a series of documentaries composed of 11 episodes of 26 minutes each. The series will focus on the cultural and naturalistic aspects, giving particular importance to outdoor activities as a whole. The “Caccia e Pesca” TV channel will broadcast the TV series according to the following schedule: A new episode per week will be transmitted 10 times in the space of one week. After a period of 12 months, the entire series will be newly broadcasted and successively used as library material.

For a detailed report on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please read the Ron Wakita report and photos below. In addition, other guides have reports. See below.

Fishing Report for the Week of September 16 to 22, 2007

Al Sasuga Spey casting into the “River of Mists”. Photo credit: Cam Thiessen/Al Sasuga

The Skeena River and its tributaries have been coming into shape quite nicely after heavy rains early last week, and the middle of this week. The Skeena itself had dropped substantially early this week, but has since leveled off and there have been consistent flows. Certain areas of the Skeena have been producing well for Steelhead and Coho, although catch rates are much lower than they were when Pinks and Sockeye were migrating up the river. If you are on the Skeena though when a pod of fish moves through, there is no place like it!

And for the past week, we have hosted Jeff Bright and 9 anglers from Finland. Very experienced fly fishermen, each one hooked into some great Steelhead on the Skeena and its tributaries, along with cart-wheeling Coho on the fly. In many cases, the Coho were found holding in shallow sand flats in 2-4 feet of water, and the Finns did a great job of sight casting to them and employing rapid strips to exploit the Coho’s aggressive nature. Once hooked, the Coho often put up acrobatic, high flying runs. Erkki Kainulainen landed the largest Coho – a 15 lb chromer. Not to mention that 5 Steelhead were taken on the dry fly as well. It certainly was a great time had by all, and thanks also go out to Ismo Uosukainen for his finely prepared carpaccia and sushi!

The fall season is now upon us, and we are in the prime time for Fall Steelhead and Coho. With each day and certainly each freshet, more of these spectacular fish will be ascending the Skeena…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:

Marc Girard of Reliable Guide and Charters drifted with his clients Luc, Steve and Deni on September 17th and landed 2 Coho and lost a couple more.

There were six Coho landed at the hatchery Friday morning September 21st. Five of these were all hooked bottom bouncing roe with a spin n glo. The sixth was hooked on a jig. The Kitimat River is very low and clear and most of the Coho are being caught during the morning and evening bite. The Coho seem to be grouping at the Hatchery and the Goose Creek run in the lower river. Friday night there were another five Coho caught below the hatchery. Drifting the middle section river right now is a bit spotty with the new fish holding in the lower end. The river needs a bump of water to move fish but in the Northwest one has to be careful what one wishes for. There is some rain forecast for this weekend, so here's hoping for a little rain for the river anglers but not too much.

On Friday night September 21st the Kitimat rose 4' and a bunch of Coho were on the move. Alex Nemeth drifted with his clients Robin Frosse, Dave Eby and Rod Fitzpatrick on Saturday September 22nd. They hooked fifteen Coho but only managed to land four.

I had the pleasure of guiding John Harder and Tony Tiani on Saturday. We hooked eight Coho and were able to land four. Coho fishing on the Kitimat is not as good as it normally is this time of the year but there are a fair number of Coho in the system and with a little effort Coho are being caught.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

With the Kitimat River staying relatively low for this time of year there are some Coho still schooling up in the harbour.

My neighbor, Ted Hrynkiw boated 4 Coho and lost 4 Wednesday September 19th.

Wes Owens from Golden Adventure Charters also boated four Coho on September 21st with his clients. There are Coho being caught in the Harbour fishery but not in the numbers that we have become accustomed to. The main run is either late or not going to happen. Only Mother Nature knows what will happen with this year's Coho run but stay tuned to this Fishing report and either way we will report the results.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort

Fishing is very much ongoing at Nimmo Bay. October 15 is our last official day. Kevin O'Neill our pilot / guide provided accesses to this Chinook, while our young guest reaped the reward. See photo-of the-week above.

For the most part the fall has been beautiful, with sunny days and great fishing. There are rivers we access where the Coho haven't started to come into. Each day provides a new pageant and the angling odyssey at Nimmo Bay continues to amaze fishers from around the world. Ireland, England and South Africa will be taking back their stories of great catches and magnificent scenery, while stopping to enjoy a shore lunch at 7000 feet.

The food from our coastal kitchen continues to amaze anglers with a big appetite, after a day on the rivers. This gourmet collection of coastal delicacies goes beyond 'numbers of stars' and is best described as Bombastic or Almost Biblical. But I guess you just have to be here to truly understand how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Note from Noel: This year in 2007, out of 10 Heli fishing and tour resorts and lodges from around the world, Nimmo Bay Resort was voted number one by the prestigious, New York based Forbes Traveler magazine.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated September 2 – September 9, 2007

Dear Fishing Friends:

Fishing in general has been good for Salmon and Steelhead. The Skeena River water height has been dropping since September 5 and is in near perfect condition, although a little “cloudy” today. The cause may be from the last of the snow melt coming off of the mountains which contain very fine glacial silt. Some rivers have so much silt it causes them to turn a green colour.

Steelhead fishing on the Skeena varies from slow to very good, depending where and how you angle for them.

Sockeye and Chum fishing are spotty but there are still plenty of Pinks to catch although many are getting dark. The Sockeye are getting dark also.

The fall Coho fishery has started and there is a question as to the size of the run. I guess time will tell.

For a detailed report on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please read the Ron Wakita report and photos below. In addition, other guides have reports. See below.

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm for a New video clip posted on September 7. It is numbered and titled:

Video Clip 0008 Cam Thiessen coho fly fishing Skeena River

Cam is an AAG for Nicholas Dean Lodge and was demonstrating to his client how to present the fly correctly and POW he hooked this fish. The clip was recorded on August 16th. The weather was hot and the fly fishing was hotter. The fly fishing group lost count of the fish they hooked but I was able to make video (raw footage) clips for 3 Steelhead, 3 Pinks, 3 Sockeye and 1 Coho. This was a record for me as I really hope to make only one usable clip, but 10 clips… unbelievable! I did not even stay the whole day I left around 2:30 in the afternoon.

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Coho, Chum, Sockeye, Pink, Chinook and Steelhead in the river. Halibut, Bottom Fishing and Coho in the ocean Kitimat Douglas Channel and Prince Rupert.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena River is in great shape. Water has been dropping since September 5. The Kitimat River is up and down but has been fishable all week. The Kalum River is clean. Other Skeena tribs towards Prince Rupert are clean.

CURRENT WATER HEIGHTS FOR:

SKEENA RIVER: RIVER AT USK (08EF001 RIVER AT USK (08EF0

KITIMAT RIVER:
http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp?stnid=08FF002

SKEENA RIVER: Fishing is fair for Sockeye throughout the whole system. To catch them in any numbers consistently you need to fish for them on specific gravel bars that have a specific flow of water. If you don’t have the proper flow you just don’t catch them. Pinks are showing in abundant numbers and can be caught just about anywhere in any flow of water. Both the Sockeye and the Pinks are starting to get dark now. There is Chum in the river but not in any great numbers. Coho fishing is slow and it should be “gangbusters” this time of year. We are keeping an eye on it. Fly fishing for Steelhead is fair to good. Both single hand and Spey fly rods work well although fishermen are telling me the Spey fly rod has the edge. Even though it is a bigger rod, usually 14 or 15 feet in length it takes less effort to cast. Usually one roll cast is all you need to reach where the fish are swimming by. This river is “where to be” for fly fishing. The main stem is the “highway” for Salmon and Steelhead heading to their many different tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: Steelhead are entering the river now. Coho are entering the river now. It is quite possible to hook both Steelhead and Coho on the same day.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

KASIKS RIVER: The Coho should be entering the river now. Fishing on the lower end has started although I hear the catch numbers have been low.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: With the higher water good numbers of Coho should be entering the river now. The majority of the fish will be holding up in the lower end (first 3 miles or so) in the deep dark pools.

EXSTEW RIVER: The Coho should be entering the river now. This is a difficult river to fish as the water is usually a heavy green colour due to a high content of glacial silt.

STARTING NOW Think about hiring an experienced jet boat fishing guide for the above three rivers for fall Coho (Silver) Salmon. It will change your life…believe me!

GITNADOIX RIVER: The Coho seem to school up in calm pools on the lower end. With high water they will shoot up the river. Access to this river is very difficult. Experienced jet boat operators only please.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: When the water is clean a few Steelhead have been caught. I have reports of some nice fish landed using both spin and fly. This is the time of year to try and get them to take a dry fly.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides.

ISHKHEENICKH RIVER This is a fantastic river for Coho this time of year. The water needs to be rising and falling to keep the fish moving up river.

MEZIADIN RIVER Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day plus numerous local trout and Dolly Varden char.

The fall colours in the Nass River and trib region this time of year are absolutely beautiful. Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm view some of the scenic photos.

In addition to scenic photos cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm to watch a few video clips from the beautiful Nass River system.

CRANBERRY RIVER Both Steelhead and Coho can be hooked on the same day. Access to this river is not very good. It is mostly a walk and wade river now.

TSEAX RIVER: Has a late run of Chinook. I have a report of good numbers of Chinook landed in the lower end down near the mouth. The best access is via jet boat but some determined folks like to walk in from the road, just beware of the grizzly bears. Coho should be right behind the Chinook or even mixed in with them.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are coming in now. More rain the better.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now with the higher tides.

OCEAN FISHING PRINCE RUPERT:

A summary of what is available year round can be read in the Archived Fishing Report dated April 13, 1997. For a direct link cast here: http://noelgyger.ca/archived-fishing-reports/Old%20Fishing%20Reports%201997.doc

FISHING REPORT from Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge

My two guests Troy Adams and Marcus (Whitey) Irving were on their 7th trip to the Skeena River. They were Spey fly fishing the last couple of days Sept 3-4 and they landed five Steelhead and lost nine plus the usual multiple varieties of wild Salmon which was plenty of action to keep everyone happy! Troy and Marcus are experienced with the Spey fly rod system and a third chap Wayne Davidson who joined us, is learning. We loaned him a rod to try out. The question is, will he get hooked on the Spey fly rod? The largest fish were an 18-pound Steelhead, 13-pound Coho and 10-pound Sockeye. The river came up on September 5 and the fishing slowed down but they still managed to hook four Steelhead (lost them) and a bunch more Salmon, including the 'elusive' Skeena River Chum Salmon. The fish just kept migrating upriver heading for their home tributaries. This is a fabulous fishery this time of year.

Andrew says a few more guiding days have become available. Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm for an update and contact me right away to book.

FISHING REPORT from Randy Marshal of Randy’s River Guiding

Randy reports excellent guided fishing on the Skeena all week using both spin and fly fishing methods. He even had one day off guiding and went fishing with a few friends. His friend Troy almost landed a Steelhead they estimated to weigh around 18-pounds. The hook pulled out right beside the boat.

FISHING REPORT from Chad Black of Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of September 2 to 8, 2007

The Summer and indeed the season itself has gone by very quickly here at Nicholas Dean Lodge. Though it would have been nice to have more warm, sunny Summer weather, the fishing has generally made up for the more-often-than-not, rainy days. Pinks and Sockeye made a strong showing, particularly through late July and August and are now starting to taper off, and the Coho run has continued to build and provide great fishing on the Skeena. With the recent opening of Coho fishing on the Lower Skeena Tributaries, these chrome, acrobatic fish will be a main target for guests here at the lodge. Though Steelhead numbers have been considerably lower this year than most years, the numbers are improving, and hookups on the Skeena and its tributaries have reflected this.

For river conditions, the Skeena has continued to drop after last week’s showers, and with the cooler fall nights that we’ve been experiencing, should continue this trend. What this means is ideal water conditions for Steelhead and Coho fishing. Not to mention dry fly Steelhead opportunities!

Stay tuned for next week’s report!

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

FISHING REPRT from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:

The Kitimat River experienced some high water early in the week which brought in schools of fresh Coho into the system usually on the high tides. This is typical of Coho as they tend to move when there is a bump up in water levels and like other salmon they also move on the high tides.

Consistent with this, our mobile tackle van reports Coho caught in bunches in the lower portion of the Kitimat River. Our guided drift boats are experiencing this kind of catch rates. Pat Oliver fishing with his fishing partner Chuck hooked twelve landing six on Tuesday Sept 4th. When the river is rising anglers will hook fish in bunches as the Coho move through but when the river is dropping the Coho will start to stack up in the pools and deeper water. There seems to be a fair number of Coho but no where close to the peak of the run yet.

We had some luck with clients on Saturday Sept 8th. but the results were a little spotty. I think a lot of the fish we hooked earlier in the week had moved through. I had the privilege of guiding Tom and Dianne Thomson. We landed two Coho and a whole mess of Pinks. Mark Girard guided Bill MacKenzie and Don Gabordy and they landed three Coho and even more Pinks than we did. Alex Nemeth guided Janet, Keith, and Mathew Hoffart and they landed six Coho and again a bunch of Pinks. Congrats everyone.

The Coho run should get stronger with each tide and the river is dropping. Stay Tuned to this report

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Todd of Nautical West Charters landed ten Coho on his last trip. Larry also of Nautical West fishing with Rick Mulley, Josh Wesolowski and Jack Dewalt landed 24 Coho, 15 Rock Cod and 4 halibut on September 2nd and third. September 8th Larry with clients boated 7 halibut. Well done Larry!

Fish Trap and Money Point are the two hot spots for Coho in the Douglas Channel but the fishing results seem to be a little erratic as the Coho are definitely on the move. Some boats are doing really well where others are not. Such is Life in the fishing world. Timing is everything.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated August 26 – September 2, 2007

Dear Fishing Friends:

Wow, where did August go? With the cooler rainy days it feels like summer is over. September is here and that means Coho. Our American friends call them Silvers. The more rain we have the better. High water is needed to bring in good numbers and allow jet boats access upriver. DFO predicts a good run so we will have to wait and see if that prediction comes true. Interestingly, the Tyee Test Fishery for Coho is below the six year average. I assume this refers to the summer-run Coho which should already be past Terrace. As per regulations the Coho fishing on the lower Skeena tributaries opens on Sept 1. These are the Coho we call “northerns” the big ones with the hooked nose. The biggest one I have ever seen was landed on the Kasiks River by Jack Baikowitz that weighed 27-pounds. Cast http://www.noelgyger.ca/records/Record002.jpg for a photo.

Steelhead fishing on the Skeena varies from good to spotty. Some guides report excellent fishing while others say it has been slow. I have reports of some big fish landed. Jeff Bright of www.jeffbright.com landed a 25-pounder last week and apparently landed another one around the same size this week. All with the Spey fly rod. Once again, no photo…as the saying goes the BIG one always gets away.

Sockeye and Chum fishing are spotty but there are still plenty of Pinks to catch although the fish are getting dark.

The Skeena River started to rise (worst fishing conditions) on Aug 29 and kept rising until Aug 31. Obviously this must have had an affect on the fishing, slowing it down. The river has been dropping (best fishing conditions) and cleaning ever since.

Fishing for Steelhead on the Zymoetz (Copper) River is slow at this time. Water has been dirty most of the week. Anyway some of the best fishing for Steelhead is during the classified water time period of Sept 1 to Oct 31. So I guess one could say the fishing has JUST begun. Check out some of the video clips from late last fall…WOW-WOW that is all I have to say. There are 17 Steelhead clips from the fall time period, numbered from 0007 through 0023. What kind of a run are we going to have this year?

Nicholas Dean Lodge Outpost Camp report: I understand they may take the camp down today. Below is a photo of one of the largest Steelhead caught at the camp this season. On the left is AAG Rick Morrison and on the right AG Dustin Kovacvich. Photo credit goes to Keith Cuddeback. Thank you very much Keith for sending it to me.

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm for another New video clip posted on August 28. It is numbered and titled:

Video Clip 0007 Rick Morrison coho fly fishing Skeena River

Little bit of back ground on the video clip. Rick is an Assistant Angling Guide (AAG) for Nicholas Dean Lodge at their outpost camp. His clients stopped fishing for lunch and he took the opportunity to make a few casts...and POW a nice Coho took his fly. He hooked it in the main flow of the river. The fish fought its way down stream and through a shallow tail-out and ended up in a back eddy where Rick landed it. Nice job Rick.

This is the first fly fishing Coho video clip I have and I hope to have more in the future.

WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena River is in fair shape. Water has been dropping the last few days. The Kitimat River is up and down but has been fishable all week. The Kalum River is clean. Other Skeena tribs towards Prince Rupert are clean.

KITIMAT RIVER:

SKEENA RIVER: Fishing is fair for Sockeye throughout the whole system. Pinks are showing in abundant numbers. Coho fishing is slow. We are keeping and eye on it. Fly fishing for Steelhead is fair. The main stem is the “highway” for Salmon and Steelhead heading to their many different tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: The main run of Coho should be entering the river now. This run spawns in the whole river. The early run that swims quickly through the whole river and into Kalum Lake is still happening. The distance is about 20 kilometers. They seem to mill around in the lake at the mouth of the Beaver (upper Kalum River) and Cedar Rivers until the water is the correct height, then they shoot up. If your timing is good you can catch them in the lake. Sockeye are in the river now but are closed to angling.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

KASIKS RIVER: With the higher water good numbers of Coho should be entering the river now. Fishing on the low end has started. Catches have been slow.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: With the higher water good numbers of Coho should be entering the river now.

EXSTEW RIVER: With the higher water good numbers of Coho should be entering the river now.

STARTING NOW Think about hiring an experienced jet boat fishing guide for the above three rivers for fall Coho (Silver) Salmon. It will change your life…believe me!

GITNADOIX RIVER: The Coho seem to school up in calm pools on the lower end. With the higher water good numbers of Coho should be entering the river now. Access to this river is difficult. Jet boat only.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: When the water is clean a few Steelhead have been caught.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides.

TSEAX RIVER: Has a late run of Chinook. I have a report of good numbers of Chinook landed in the low end down near the mouth. The best access is via jet boat but some determined folks like to walk in from the road. Coho should be right behind the Chinook or even mixed in with them.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are coming in now. More rain the better.

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now with the higher tides and rain.

KITIMAT RIVER:

The Coho return has been sporadic lately but with the recent high tides and the rainfall we had the last couple of days created two influences for the Coho to migrate into the area.

This is the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Fishing Derby weekend and a bunch of Coho showed up in time for the derby participants to catch. There were 7 Coho caught at the Pump House Friday August 28th and 9 caught at the Lower Dike. The Coho don't seem to be holding in the lower river for long as the next morning there were only 2 landed at the Pump house and 2 at the lower dike. This is typical with Coho that when the river rises the Coho migrate upriver and then hold in the deeper pools as the river drops. The Kitimat River is dropping so smart money says to go up river into the deeper pools such as Coho Flats, Powerline and even as high up river as the 18 mile rock. Another bonus of the high water is that a section of river that was impassible above the powerline has now opened up.

Stay Tuned for this weekend's derby results as we will post them on this report.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Dan O'Neil of Rising Sun Charters reported landing a 100lb. halibut but he did not enter the Derby. The largest halibut will win $500.00 cash but Dan had to have entered the Derby prior to catching the fish and time will tell whether his halibut would have been the largest at the weigh in deadline.

One of the hot spots in the Douglas Channel for Coho is 'Fish Trap' as Todd from Nautical West Charters reports limiting out his clients on August 28th. 'It's hot' Todd says and lots of other boats were doing really good as well.

Todd also reports a large halibut also pushing close to 100lbs caught in the Fish Trap area.

We will soon see whether this angler was entered in the Derby and eligible to win the First prize of $500.00.

Stay Tuned to this fishing report for all of the results from the Derby.
Good Luck to all anglers participating in the Derby or not.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated August 19 – August 26, 2007
(Number 33)

Dear Fishing Friends:

On August 24th I spent some time on the Skeena River at the Nicholas Dean Lodge - Outpost Camp. The guests at the camp were flyfishing for Steelhead, Sockeye, Coho and Pink Salmon and maybe even a Chinook or Chum. Both Spey fly rods and single hand fly rods were used. The water is in perfect shape. It had been dropping all week but has come up a little yesterday and today.

Jeff Bright of www.jeffbright.com landed a very large Steelhead estimated to weigh around 25-pounds. The fish swam away before he could get a photo. The small single barbless hook, he believes in using, partially straightened-out during the play. When I was at the camp he managed to land a Steelhead between 8 and 10-pounds of which I got a photo and a little video footage. Pro guide Dustin Kovacvich demonstrates the correct technique to calm a fish and take a quick photo before release. It looks easy for the pros, doesn’t it?

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm and another New video clip posted on August 25. It is numbered and titled:

For a detailed report on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please read the Ron Wakita report and photos below.

I have a report from pro guide Randy Marshall of Randy’s River Guiding he told me fishing was good for his guest he guided on August 23rd.

Due to a medical condition a client, booked with Randy, had to cancel. The dates of Sept. 26-27-28-29 are now available. Contact me anytime to book these dates.

I also have a report from pro guide Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge. He was gear and spin fishing his clients on the lower Skeena and reports fantastic fishing. His guests were still landing good numbers of Chinook (King) Salmon. Nothing too big…with weights of around 15 to 25-pounds but they were bright silver. The last of the Chinook run is still “pushing-in”. He also mentioned they landed a few Chum Salmon. The Sockeye fishing was slow and was not really targeted. They did pretty well landing Steelhead and Coho. Andrew guides both fly and spin.

Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:

The Kitimat River this past week has experienced one of the few interludes in terms of salmon migration. Typically there is at least one species of salmon running in good numbers through out the summer months on the Kitimat. There appears to be a bit of a gap in the Coho return. There are a few Coho logged every day in our Mobile Tackle Van but not in the numbers that we should be recording. I never cease to be amazed by the wonders of nature and with this year's record snow pack and extreme high water it is difficult to predict these effects on this year's Coho fishing season. I suspect we will see better numbers starting this weekend as we rotate through some very large high tides. The majority of Pinks have reached their final stage in their life cycle and are spawning and dying. The Pink return was exceptional this year as well as the Chinook. I am always amazed by the size of some Chinook carcasses that wash up on the shoreline this time of the year. Wow, there are some big buggers! This is good for future generations as the genetic size of these fish has been perpetuated. All those
in the 'know' or who think they 'know' are predicting exceptional Chinook returns for next year. Stay Tuned!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

The Kitimat Harbour Coho fishery similar to the Kitimat River Coho fishery
experienced some below average results this past week. There have been some Coho caught but not in the numbers typical for this time of year. We anxiously wait for what the big tides produce.

The outer waters of the Douglas Channel continue to produce really good numbers.
Todd and Larry of Nautical West Adventures had some outstanding results their last trip out. Todd boated 24 Coho for his clients and 3 halibut. Larry boated 32 Coho and 4 halibut. 'Well Done' Todd and Larry. Congrats, on some great results and I am sure that there are some great Fish stories that go with the results. It is interesting to note the exceptionally high numbers of 'Mud sharks' (dog fish) in the area. Todd commented on the difficulty in getting through the sharks to get down to bottom fish. Berkley has manufactured a series of bait called 'GULP' that some anglers claim does not attract Mud Sharks. Stay Tuned as it is still work in progress. I will comment in a later fishing report when all the results are in.

A REMINDER: for any anglers interested in participating in the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Fishing Derby on the Labour Day weekend in September stay tuned to this fishing report and please go to www.visitkitimat.com for more details.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated August 12 – August 19, 2007

Dear Fishing Friends:

On August 16, I was invited to fly fish with Dustin Kovacvich, owner of Nicholas Dean Lodge and his three guests (father-son-daughter). They were flyfishing on the Skeena River for Steelhead, Sockeye, Coho and Pink Salmon. Both Spey fly rods and single hand fly rods were used. I lost count of all the fish they hooked but I managed to take video of 3 Steelhead, 3 Sockeye, 3 Pinks and 1 Coho and I didn't even stay with them the full day. In addition, I was also able to shoot numerous high rez photos. I'd guess they caught about 60 fish. It was an absolute fantastic day!

The Skeena River had been dropping steady and was in great shape...but…everything changed on the afternoon of August 16 when lightening, thunder and heavy rain struck. The next day the water had coloured up.

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm and watch two New video clips posted this week. They are titled and numbered:

1. Gary fly fishing Skeena River Steelhead. Video clip number 0043
2. Dustin Spey fly fishing Skeena River Steelhead. Video clip number 0044

The Kitimat River spin and fly fishermen are catching Coho, Chum and Pink on the low end. Ocean fishing in the Douglas Channel “out front” and “down the channel” is great. Check out the Ron Wakita report and photos below.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: Excellent

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 18-pound Steelhead Where: Skeena River Angler: Dusty Kovacvich. In addition: a 85-pound Halibut from the Douglas Channel was caught by Tom Snider.

WEATHER: Cloudy with sunny periods. Highs to 18 degrees C. Region normal: Max. Temp. 22 degrees C. Min. Temp. 11 degrees C. Sunrise 6:17 am Sunset 8:59 pm

WATER CONDITIONS: The Skeena River water levels have been dropping but all that changed on the afternoon of August 16 when the heavy rain came. The water came up for a couple of days but has stabilized and is dropping again. It looks fishable today. The Kitimat River is up and down but has been fishable all week. The Kalum River is clean. Other Skeena tribs towards Prince Rupert are clean.

CURRENT WATER HEIGHTS FOR:

KITIMAT RIVER:
http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp?stnid=08FF002

SKEENA RIVER: Fishing is good for Sockeye throughout the whole system. Pinks are showing in abundant numbers. Coho fishing seems strong. We are keeping and eye on it. Fly fishing for Steelhead has been pretty good. We are keeping an eye on it. The main stem is the “highway” for Salmon and Steelhead heading to their many different tributary rivers.

KALUM RIVER: Waiting for the main run of Coho now. The early run that swims quickly through the whole river and into Kalum Lake has started.

KASIKS RIVER: Waiting for Coho now. A few will be swimming in on the low end.

EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Waiting for Coho now. A few will be swimming in on the low end.

EXSTEW RIVER: Waiting for Coho now.

NOTICE: the above three rivers fishing for Coho is a “change your life” experience. Check it out sometime.

GITNADOIX RIVER: Waiting for Coho now. They seem to school up in calm pools on the lower end. Access to this river is difficult. Jet boat only.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: When the water is clean a few Steelhead have been caught in the lower end. The rainstorm we had on August 16th blew out the river. By Sunday it was starting to come back into shape. Dirty water from the Copper flows into the Skeena.

KINCOLITH RIVER: Coho should be coming in on high tides.

TSEAX RIVER: Coho should be coming in now.

KWINIMASS RIVER: Coho are coming in now

ECSTALL RIVER: Coho should be coming in now.

OCEAN FISHING PRINCE RUPERT:

The above two photos are my good friends Guy and Astrid Gangl of Luxembourg. They were enjoying their first Halibut charter out of Prince Rupert with their guide Randy Marshall of Randy’s River Guiding in Terrace. This was their 10th return trip to Terrace.

FISHING REPORT FROM: Nicholas Dean Lodge Fishing Report for the Week of August 12 to 18, 2007

The fishing on the Skeena has been incredible over the past week, as many of our guests experienced. Although Pinks and Sockeye are the main species hitting flies, there have also been some acrobatic Coho and freight train Steelhead landed. These fish are chrome bright, just a day or two from the Ocean and are at their peak condition. Needless to say, their fighting qualities are excellent!

And each day that goes by, more Steelhead and Coho enter the Skeena, making you wonder what the next pull on your fly or lure will be…

Contact Noel to book your trip NOW! There are a few spots left this year.

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:

The river is in great fishing condition. There continues to be an excessive number of Pink salmon. The state of the Pink salmon range from bright with sea lice to some that are humped up and well into their spawning colours.

The Chum salmon return has yet to reach the typical numbers that the Kitimat
River is famous for. Some of the Chum are also transforming into their
spawning colour and developing their canine teeth that the Chum are known
for. And so goes the natural course of the salmon spawning cycle.

The Coho are starting to show in increasing numbers. Pat Oliver, Mark
Girard and Alex Nemaeth (the three amigos) drifted Friday August 17th and
hooked six Coho and landed four. They are all associate guides for Reliable
Guide and Charters Ltd who are doing 'home work' drifts in preparation for Coho
bookings we have for later in the month.

Our mobile tackle van is also reporting higher than average numbers of Coho
being caught in the lower Kitimat. Most of the Coho are being caught on
Pink Jigs and Koho 45 spoons.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

The Kitimat Harbour fishery is starting to show more Coho. Wes Owens of
Golden Adventures boated four Coho and one Chinook on August 17th. Other
boaters are experiencing similar catch rates. The Harbour fishery should start to really pick up with each high tide.

The Douglas Channel continues to produce halibut. Tom Snider and his fishing partner Brendon Hodge boated 5 halibut. We scaled one which weighed in at 85lbs. There was another one in the boat which was also close to the same weight. They also caught a 25lb Ling Cod and many other assorted bottom fish. This is typically a really good time for halibut fishing in the northern end of Douglas Channel (closer to Kitimat) because of the number of spawned out carcasses of Pinks and Chum drifting out of the numerous creeks and rivers. All the bottom fish migrate into the inner waters of the Douglas Channel to feed and accordingly most boaters also take advantage of this natural migration of bottom fish.

A REMINDER: for any anglers interested in participating in the Kitimat
Chamber of Commerce Fishing Derby on the Labour Day weekend in September.
Stay tuned to this fishing report for more details.

Thank You to everyone who contributed to this report.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated August 5 – August 12, 2007

Dear Fishing Friends:

Some of you may have noticed I sent last weeks fishing report out early, around 11 AM instead of the usual late afternoon time. The reason for this, I was invited to fish with Ron Wakita on his ocean boat in the Douglas channel. I met him at Moon Bay Marina at noon. It was kind of a family fishing day with Ron, Natalie, Corry, (Ron’s son) and two of his young friends. Ron had fresh Dungeness crab cooking onboard when I arrived. I ate fresh, cooked Crab all day. Re: fishing. To make a long story short the fishing was absolutely fantastic! The rods were “jumping” ALL day with fish-on! Ron worked, non-stop to keep all four rods fishing properly. Ron really knows his stuff. Natalie was also very helpful with the rods and Cory did a masterful job steering the boat. Me being helpful…well, my excuse, I am a river fisherman, don’t know much about ocean boats or ocean fishing. The day was mostly a “blur” of action but I remember we caught three Coho, a dozen Pink and three or four Chum…plus our limit of Crab. We also lost a lot of fish. After fishing we went to a barbeque Ron had for his assistant guides, staff, clients and friends to “celebrate” a successful spring Steelhead and summer Chinook season (March 1 to July 31). Fun was had by all, especially me… I ate more Crab. I got home late to clean and cook my limit of six Crabs…and ate more Crab. The next day I ate crab again for dinner. By then, I was “crabbed out”. Thanks to everyone who helped put on a fabulous barbeque!

The Skeena River water level continues to drop and fishing is “excellent” for Sockeye and Pink Salmon for both spin and fly fishermen. Steelhead and Coho are starting to show but NOT in any great numbers…so far. Concern is being expressed, by many anglers as to the size of the (summer-run) Steelhead run this year. It is very low according to the Tyee Test Fishery: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/northcoast/skeena/indexhelp.htm Cast to North Coast Steelhead Alliance: http://www.ncsteelheadalliance.ca/ for conservation updates and I will do my best to keep you informed in these reports and through items posted on the News Bulletin page.

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm and watch three New video clips posted this week. Two videos of Sockeye fly fishing and one of Pink fly fishing all on the Skeena River.

Cast to http://www.noelgyger.ca/for-sale-videos-dvd-photos.htm and check out one New river Scenic photos. This one is of the Kasiks River, described as “the most beautiful river in the world”, by one of my past guests. Bright silver Coho should be “swimming in” the lower end right now.

As the Kitimat River spin and fly fishermen celebrate the end of their Chinook season, everyone is happy to not target them and let them spawn. Coho, Chum and Pink are entering the river now. Ocean fishing in the Douglas Channel is great. Check out the Ron Wakita report and photos below.

Correction: I incorrectly described the area of the Skeena River Chinook Salmon closure in my last report. It should have read: The Chinook closure on August 7 is from the Lakelse River mouth upstream to the Skeena River Overpass (new Hwy 16 bridge) at Ferry Island. I had inadvertently described the Classified Waters section thinking it was the same zone for the closure. I guess it pays to read the regs.

FISHING REPORT FROM: Nicholas Dean Lodge Fishing Report for the Week of August 5 to 11, 2007

“Tight lines and screaming reels,” my favorite catch phrase for signing off on a weekly report, could not be more accurate than for this past week. The fishing in the Skeena and its tributaries is on fire. Pink, Sockeye, Coho and Chinooks have been making a strong appearance on the Skeena, and when in combination with the famous Skeena Summer Steelhead, you never know what the next pull on your fly will be. Take for example Jeff Paffrath and his family and friends. They had been out fishing in the Queen Charlottes for Chinook and Coho, but wanted a change of pace, something different, so our guides took them to a few of their favorite spots. Jeff and the gang quickly understood why the Skeena is such an incredible fishery. Between the 6 of them, they landed between 250 and 300 fish in one day. The ever numerous Pinks provided the bulk of the action, but the crew also landed about 20 early run Coho and 50 scrappy Sockeye. But, as always, the best is always saved for last…

Dusty Schad was letting his fly swing slowly through the riffle when he felt his line stop suddenly. It could have been any type of Salmon, but both he and the guides knew right away that this was no Salmon. Fresh chrome, bullet chrome, white chrome are all words used to describe fresh Skeena Steelhead, and this was no different. After a rod bucking, line peeling fight, Sky Richard tailed 20 lbs of Summer Steelhead for Dusty. Certainly a great way to etch into your mind a memorable encounter with one the ghosts of the Skeena…and to foster that feeling of Steelhead fever…

Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:

Fishing Report from: Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER:

The Kitimat River continues to produce an abnormally large number of Pink Salmon. It is also producing a larger than normal amount of Coho for this time of year. The river conditions are excellent although it is higher than the average yearly river heights. The height of the river during the early migration of the Coho return has a major effect on the Coho fishery in both the Kitimat River fishery and the Douglas Channel harbour fishery.

Our mobile van logs the height of the river at least twice daily. We document the river catch rates when the river is high in the early stages of the Coho return and the catch rates when the river is low. When the river is high the catch rates in the river are higher and accordingly the catch rates in the Kitimat harbour fishery declines. This is very logical because the higher water attracts more Coho to migrate the river and hence they are not available to the salt water fishery.

It is interesting to note that the last two years have the extreme scenarios of low and high water. Last year the Kitimat River as well as most rivers in B.C experienced record low river conditions. This year we have had record snow pack accordingly record high river conditions. It will be interesting to see what evolves depending on what “Mother Nature” provides for weather. Stay Tuned!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

The Douglas Channel has “exceptional” numbers of Coho in the outer waters. 'Piles of them…it's stupid', are two quotes from boaters.

There also continues to be more large halibut being caught. Marco Bravo, one of the owners of our local Irly Bird Building Supplies store caught a 126lb. halibut this week.

The halibut fishing in the inner waters of the Douglas should start to peak as the halibut migrate up this end to feed on the spawned out Chinook, Chum and Pink salmon carcasses. With the abnormal amount of pinks should entice more halibut in closer?

Life is short! Fish Lots!

Thank You to every one who contributed to this report.
