Report Description:
The photo of the week shows Sky Richard, angling guide for Nicholas Dean Lodge, about to release a beautiful, bright Chinook (King) Salmon back into the river this week. Sky was fishing with Chad Black and they both experienced a great day fishing with all gear types including the Spey fly rod. It inspired Chad so much that he wrote an article which can be read at http://www.noelgyger.ca/info-articles.htm the article is titled Just Keep Casting for BIG Chinook. Check it out sometime. Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated June 15 – June 22, 2008
(Number 76)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been cool all week. Fishing conditions and fishing were near perfect most of the week which tempted me to use the term “Excellent” but things turned around Saturday, it rained most of the day, so I had to lower my expectation to “Good”. The Salmon runs are moving upriver no matter what the conditions, high, low, dirty or clean. The Skeena River had been dropping and cleaning and was in perfect fishable condition up until Saturday, when the water started to come up again. More and more people were out fishing. I received numerous reports of some very good catches of big, bright, fresh Chinook (King) Salmon. The smaller “Jack” Chinook were being caught along the edges with light tackle and roe. The best way to angle for the BIG Chinook is by plunking out on a gravel bar. If the Salmon are swimming by and you have your gear in the water there is a good chance you may hook-up. Lower Kalum is in good shape and I have reports of Salmon being caught there also. Kitimat River is in good shape and Chinook fishing in the river has really picked up. The best fishing guides seem to know where the fish are holding and have done pretty well using the proper techniques and tackle.
It was difficult for me to decide which Photo of the Week to select as I had a few to choose from.
The DFO Tyee Test Fishery on the Skeena River indicates the Chinook run for this year is double from last year. This is a very early trend let’s hope it continues.

WATER CONDITIONS: Skeena River is borderline fishable. Lower Kalum River is fishable. Most of the smaller coastal streams are in good shape. Kitimat River is clean. Zymoetz (Copper River) is dirty (it was clean all week but got dirty on Saturday due to some local steady rain)
CURRENT WATER HEIGHTS FOR:
SKEENA RIVER:

KITIMAT RIVER:
http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp?stnid=08FF002
SKEENA RIVER: The water heights have been dropping most of the week. Fishing for Chinook (King) Salmon was red hot. This is the time of year when the Chinook migrate up the Skeena heading to their home rivers. There are a lot of fish in the river now and when the water is clean the fishing is fabulous.
KALUM RIVER: The water in the low end (below the first canyon) is fishable. Hopefully a good run of Chinook are still entering. I have a report of some good catches on the lower end. This is the time of year I have done exceptionally well fishing for Chinook in the past but this was in the upper end. Sad to say it has been closed to Chinook angling for a long time to protect the spawning runs. If the runs get strong enough I’m sure it will open to angling again. We are all hopeful.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
KASIKS RIVER: It is now possible to fish for Chinook at the mouth, in the clean seam, where it joins the Skeena. Sometimes the Chinook come out of the Skeena and into the clean water in search for scent of their home river.
EXCHAMSIKS RIVER: Same as above, it is now possible to fish for Chinook in the clean seam.
EXSTEW RIVER: Same as above, it is now possible to fish for Chinook in the clean seam.
Note: the above three rivers are closed to angling for Chinook except at the very low end. Please check 2007 – 2009 BC Freshwater Salmon Supplement (fancy name for regulations) at: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish for details.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water was clean until Saturday when a local rain colored it up again.
KINCOLITH RIVER: The Chinook have started to come in with the high tides. Fishing for them is only allowed below the bridge. This is tidal water so anglers must have a salt water license even though you are fishing in the river.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of June 15 to June 21, 2008
Hello Anglers,
The past week has seen some incredible fishing. Most of which I have reported in the article which Noel has posted on his website http://www.noelgyger.ca/info-articles.htm the article is titled Just Keep Casting for BIG Chinook.
Noel was kind enough to choose the photo that went along with the article as his Photo of the Week.
Until next week be safe on the water.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River has noticeably produced on the days that the Kitimat Harbour Fishery has dropped off. This would make sense if you subscribe to the notion that if the chinook migrate from the harbour into the river. It would be logical that the catch rate would drop off in the harbour. This definitely appears to be the case but normally as the chinook migrate into the river they are replaced by more Chinook migrating up channel. Each year's chinook run has a different or quirky circumstance and has happened this year.
Dave Berguron weighed in a 43lb chinook on Thursday morning at our tackle store and reported that he caught another one Wednesday night that he estimated weighing over 50lbs. Mike weighed in a 19lb.chinook on Thursday afternoon. Jesse Houston an employee of our tackle store reports a run moving through the lower river last night. (Friday June 20th) Jesse while fishing the Hatchery Island watched a 'pile of chinook move through'. There is a growing high tide which peaked Friday at 17.7'. This high tide coupled with a rising river usually translates into more Chinook caught in the Kitimat River.
Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters verified this theory with Mark and Rose Thiele-Zielinski on Saturday. Mark and Rose were the lucky winners of a guided trip on the Kitimat River which we donated to the Midget Provincial Championship which Kitimat recently hosted this spring. Mark and Rose also won accommodations at Minette Bay Lodge. Mike put Mark and Rose on to seven Chinook landing two. They battled three others for fifteen minutes or more before they lost them. Mike estimates two of the Chinook thirty plus lbs. Congratulations to Mark and Rose on a Great Day of Chinook fishing and special recognition of Mike's Guiding ability. Well Done!
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Kitimat Harbour Fishery produced some chinook Father's Day (Sunday June 15th) for many father's as well as quite a few other boaters. I had the pleasure of fishing with my two daughters, Julie and Michelle and my son, Corey. We hooked four Chinook and were able to land two. The chinook we landed were only 10lbs and the other was 16lbs but the gratification a father feels when fishing with his kids can only be understood by other parents who share the passion fishing with their children.
There were quite a few other boats turned 'broad side' with fish on. Wes Owens of Golden Adventures hooked two and landed one 18lbs. Todd of Nautical West Adventures boated two chinook 19lbs and 20lbs. Cosby Smith also landed two Chinook, sizes unknown as Cosby was being secretive that day. Fishermen are a strange breed!?!
The chinook run in the harbour still appears to be a bit late and the catch rates although were pretty good on Sunday have been erratic; good one day off the next.

A HOG FOR SURE! 3 OF US ON THE ROD TO LAND IT 1 KM DOWNSTREAM FROM THE BOAT – Photo by Tracey Hittel
As predicted by the Biologists in the Kitimat region, large Chinooks are lurking in the local waters. Many fish in the mid to upper 40-pound range are being hooked some not as fortunate as the pic above. When this monster hit, it took all of the anglers in the boat and 1KM of river to bring this bad boy into the net. 47 inch length and 27 inch girth. According to Noel’s formula (girth squared x length x 1.54 divided by 1000) this fish would have weighed 52.76 – pounds. WOW!
Not to mention a 49-pounder taken on an 8wt fly rod, this fish took the angler 3KM down river to finally bring the fish to shore.
With peak season a few weeks away the early run is starting to flood the river as well the saltwater fishing has picked up. Killer Whales are migrating in the Douglas Channel to feed on the schools of Salmon as they start their journey to the spawning grounds.
Guests arriving this week are from England, Calgary, Saskatoon and Italy. Tight lines. Tracey Hittel
Fishing Report and Photos from: Westcoast Fishing Adventures
Mark Pendlington and Austen McKean Austen releases the BIG Chinook
Gill McKean, the owner of Westcoast Fishing Adventures was shooting a sportfishing show this week with Mark Pendlington of Sportfishing BC fame and Gill’s son Austen is the star. They did very well.
A photo of me and my brother with the double header is from today (June 20th) on the Skeena, Austen and Mark landed a few nice fish yesterday on the Kitimat. The Skeena is heating up!!
The spring Steelhead season is officially over and the Chinook are here. It started out a little slow but now they are coming in hot and heavy! We are seeing higher than average sizes, the little ones are 30-pounds. With the rising gas prices we are seeing less traffic on the rivers and more fish than ever so don’t delay…it’s time to play! Life is short…live for today!
The Ocean fishing is red hot as well. The Halibut fishing is the best I have seen in years and we are already catching Coho along with the Chinook…what a combination.
Contact Noel anytime and he will get you hooked-up. Tight Lines. Gill McKean

The best fishing guides seem to know where the fish are holding and have done pretty well using the proper techniques and tackle. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.
I have been in touch with DFO and asked if they have a prediction for the size of the Skeena Salmon run this year. Mark Reagan, Resource Manager, Recreational fisheries explained, “The only species we formally forecast for the Skeena is sockeye and we are forecasting a run size of 1.3 million for 2008. We should have a good idea by early July on chinook and the tyee test fishery is scheduled to start on June 10.”

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of June 8 to June 14, 2008
Hello Anglers,
The past week has been a tough one for fishing in the Skeena region near Terrace, though there is evidence that both water conditions and fishing will improve. Early in the week, clients fished the main channel Skeena, and even though the large river was dropping and clearing, the fishing was tough. The Kitimat was a little more generous in giving up its prized Chinook, and clients landed a few chrome fish between 15 and 30 lbs, despite the fact that the river was low and clean. Mid week, however, we received a large amount of rainfall, which should raise river levels in the Kitimat and encourage those fish waiting in Douglas Channel to migrate upriver.
On their time off, Greg and Sky have been out bar fishing and scouting out new water as much as possible, and have been successful on most days. Plunking can be an incredibly effective way to target Chinook when they’re migrating upriver, provided that you choose your location wisely. Over the years, our guides have learned many of the best spots for setting up the “plunk show,” and there’s nothing like seeing your rod tip twitch slightly, and then have line peel off as you set the hook into a heavy fish!
And last, but not least, I had the opportunity to fish a Skeena tributary yesterday afternoon with guide Jeff Langley. It had been awhile since we’d cast our Spey rods, and, coupled with my ambition to hook into a Chinook on the fly, decided to cast large, chartreuse and blue flies on heavy sink tips into the stained water. It took a little getting used to at the start, but casting the Skagit head and heavy line was much easier than I thought it was going to be, and became quite enjoyable. The only problem was that I had to remind myself not to cast too far! Jeff had the good opportunity to hook into a Chinook briefly, enough to get the adrenaline going, but it was not meant to last, unfortunately. I guess that just means we’ll have to go out and do it again!
We are still offering a 5% discount off the 2008 rates for select weeks in our Trophy Chinook season – contact Noel today for more details!
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River has been in great fishing shape this week. Even when it has been high the water clarity has been very good and so has the chinook fishing.
Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters has been doing really well drifting the Kitimat. June 9th Mike drifted with his friend Alvaro. They hooked 4 Chinook and landed two. They released an 11lb jack and kept an 18 lb chinook. Mike also drifted on June 11th and landed another chinook with Mr. Pereria. Over the years Mike has evolved a relationship with an eagle on the Kitimat River. Mike catches a chinook and leaves the gut pile on a stump for his buddy the eagle.
Pat Oliver of Reliable hooked three chinook for his clients on Thursday but they were unable to land any of them. .Chinook are big tough fish and the sometimes sad reality is that anglers will not land them all. The more difficult the challenge the more rewarding the accomplishment. Such is the case with chinook fishing. Pat fishing with his buddy Gene Mattiuz landed a 16lb. chinook on Friday
There was two chinook landed at the Pump house Friday morning and one at the Big Spruce Friday night. There was also a report of a chinook landed above the Haisla bridge.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Tony and Caroline Deries caught 6 halibut and lost 2, largest at 82 lbs and smallest at 17lbs last week. To go with that they caught 1 dozen grey cod and 16 Dungeness Crab. They were fishing at Grant's Point at low tide. There were four of them fishing. Congratulations to Tony, Caroline and friends on a Great Day of fishing!
The Kitimat Harbour fishery has had some sporadic results this week. I fished Sunday June 8th with my friend Doug Rumley, my twin brother Rick and my nephew Derek. Rick boated a chinook 19 lbs and Doug landed one 24lbs.
Derek landed the biggest of the day, 46lbs. This unusual feature of this chinook was the colour. Although caught in the salt water on June 8th and covered in Sea lice this chinook exhibited spawning colours of a chinook caught in the river late July. Despite the colour the chinook gave Derek an exceptional battle that Derek won. Congrats Derek.
Wes Owens of Golden Adventures hooked four chinook on Monday June 9th boating two. Wes was guiding Italian clients from Nicholas Dean lodge.
Cosby Smith of Cosby Smith Fishing Adventures boated two chinook on Monday as well.
Dan Oneil reports catching a chinook on Thursday. Saturday June 14th, I had the pleasure of fishing with Ken Markiwski and Aaron. We boated a chinook 26lbs and lost another.
It seems that the Kitimat Harbour fishery is stronger when the river is low and declines a bit when the river height bumps up. This is typical phenomenon which has been occurring for years. It makes sense that the chinook would migrate into the river when the river height is higher.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated June 1 – June 8, 2008
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Wow, the opportunity to catch a BIG Chinook (King) Salmon is here now! We have some decent river conditions. The weather has been pretty good all week and you can’t beat this early summer season. It has been a little on the cool side with the odd rain shower but this is good and helps the rivers shape up. Believe it or not the mighty Skeena is borderline (to fair) fishable. Normally, in a good year, thousands of Chinook Salmon are in the river heading upstream to their home rivers. The Salmon swim no matter how dirty the water is. If this water gets a little cleaner…watch out…the “bites” are going to be fantastic! Best places to fish are anywhere downstream of Terrace BC. Excitement grows from anglers and guides in the Terrace area for this opportunity and an anticipation of another good run. The only problem with this glowing scenario is we don’t know the size of the Salmon run yet. The lower Kalum has fresh Chinook (King) Salmon moving in and the knowledgeable guides know where to go and how to catch them. Fishing at the mouths of rivers where tributaries enter side channels of the Skeena River is also a good bet at this time i.e. the Exstew, Kasiks and Exchamsiks Rivers. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is still dirty. Thank goodness for the Kitimat River and other smaller coastal rivers and streams because if the big Skeena is un-fishable these smaller waters usually are. And ocean and lake fishing is fantastic. BTW - the Kitimat River is clean but fishing is only fair for Chinook. The run seems to be late this year. Check out the Ron Wakita report below for more detail.
The above photo shows six Japanese guests at Nicholas Dean Lodge. Mr. Tahara Yasufumi (bottom row – right side) was here 15 years ago. Nice to have a repeat guest even if it takes a few years. That’s me on the far left, second in from the far right is Gary Mills and far right is Chad Black. The dogs name is Ruger. They just finished two days river fishing for Chinook and are on their way to Prince Rupert for three days of ocean fishing. This is their fourth trip back for ocean fishing. The river fishing was slow for them.
LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:
- June 6/08 details of a BOOK RELEASE from Nimmo Bay Resort http://www.noelgyger.ca/news-bulletin.htm

NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges for both river and ocean. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.
Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.
Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

The above photos show some very happy anglers who decided to go ocean fishing for Halibut this week…as they wait for the river fishing to get red hot for Chinook. Photo courtesy Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures
In Gill’s own words, “Here are a few photo's for a report from yesterday, what a 'BLAST' Austen, my son caught rat fish, dog fish, rock fish and of course the mighty Halibut. We even got broke off twice and I caught the same fish again with the hooks still in him!
Splash Gordon got spanked by a monster Halibut it was too funny! He is still talking about it!
Great day for the guides day OFF!
Hope you are all well…wish you were here to help us eat all this Halibut.”
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of June 1 to June 7, 2008
Hello Anglers,
Water conditions have continued to improve on many of the rivers in the Skeena region over the last week. The majority of tributary rivers has dropped, and in many cases, has started to clear. Even the big river itself has been receding slowly, and is now in the “grey” phase. At this height and clarity, it is not quite fishable in all areas, but there are some locations which can be productive, such as clean seams, where water from cleaner tributary rivers enters the Skeena. Given similar temperatures over the next week, the Skeena should continue to drop and clear.
On the other hand, the Kitimat River has been clean for most of the week, and Greg and Sky have reported some success while fishing spoons and back trolling plugs from drift boats. The Chinook landed have been a little on the small side, around 20 lbs, but as the season progresses, more and larger fish will enter the Kitimat and Skeena drainages
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River has been in great shape this week and there have been a few chinook caught. There was a chinook caught at the Lower Dike on Monday morning. Brad Schmidt, construction worker working the Eurocan Shut down caught a 20lb chinook also at the Lower Dike after work Tuesday evening. Work hard! Play hard! Well done Brad.
Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters fishing with his buddy Alvaro landed 21lb.Chinook on Friday. Mike and Alvaro also lost another Chinook on the same drift.
Terrance Reynolds also of Reliable Guide and Charters drifted this morning and they lost two Chinook, one right at the boat. As disappointing as it is to lose a fish so close to landing, it is an inevitable part of fishing that all anglers must come to terms with.
The Chinook run in the Kitimat River appears to be a little late this year and consensus of some hardcore chinook anglers is that they have had better results at this same period in previous years. We are on some big tides now and I suspect that catch rates will increase dramatically and so will the disposition of some chinook anglers. Fishermen are sure in a lot better mood when they are catching fish!
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Douglas Channel is starting to produce some pretty good results. Doug Rumley and I boated a 25lb. chinook last Sunday. Shane Campbell of Shane's Fishing Adventures fishing with his buddy Vince Sealy and Vince's Uncle Wayne hooked seven Chinook landing four between 14lbs to 28lbs on Wednesday. They also boated six halibut on the same trip. Congratulations to Shane, Vince and Uncle Wayne on a great day of fishing!
My nephew Derek and I fishing with Derek's buddy Jordan boated a 20lb. Chinook this morning.(Saturday June 7th) Wes Owen of Golden Adventures boated a 28lb.chinook today as well and lost another one also in the Kitimat Harbour.
I agree with the local consensus that the chinook run may be a bit late this year but we are definitely seeing signs that the chinook run is picking up now especially in the Kitimat Harbour fishery and further down the Douglas Channel.
The above are Todd Haynes and Rob Vodola with some very nice Kitimat Douglas Channel Harbour Chinook Salmon that did not quite make it into the river. These fish were landed on Wednesday and were estimated to weight around 28-pounds each. Photos courtesy of Todd Haynes of Nautical West Charters

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of May 20 to May 26/08
Hello Anglers,
During Trophy Chinook season, large chrome fish ascend the Skeena River and will test every ounce of your gear and stamina. Here, a Nicholas Dean guest and Dustin pose with a bright fish prior to its release. Jim Stephenson Photo
The past week in the Skeena region has, for the most part, been a little on the slow side when it comes to fishing. The Skeena River has swelled from bank to bank, and its high, roily flows make fishing in some areas a difficult pursuit. Still, with knowledge of how fish behave in high water, combined with seasons of experience, our guides know some great places to fish, even given more difficult conditions. And presently, my prediction is that conditions look favourable for the remainder of the season. During the last few weeks, the snowpack has melted substantially, and it's easy to see the differences in colour on the mountains around Terrace as they turn from white to dark green. Perhaps most importantly, this should mean that water levels in June through August should resemble more typical annual flows, which is in stark contrast to last year. As many anglers are aware, last year featured record snowpack conditions, and the ensuing snowmelt elevated rivers to such an extent that many homes were flooded in Terrace, and the meltwaters still had influence on fishing until mid August. With lower flows in June, July and August, fishing conditions for Trophy Chinook Salmon should be quite good in 2008, and I for one look forward to setting out on my first foray for the Skeena's fabled Chinook!
On this note, it is worth mentioning that we still have several spaces available here at the lodge in late June through the first few weeks of July. In this time period, the Chinook run is well underway and, in a week of fishing, guests can expect to fish the upper and lower drifts on the Kitimat River, the Kitimat estuary if conditions are favourable, as well as the main channel Skeena. I can still fondly remember two days of great fishing last year on the upper drift of the Kitimat while fishing with Sky Richard. Dustin had suggested Sky give me some pointers on the basics of rowing a drift boat, and to get a little more experience on the oars. It just so happened that we were in the middle of the prime Chinook run, and we intercepted several fish between 15 and 30 lbs. If that's what you want to call it, I'll gladly 'learn' anytime! Though we sometimes pulled plugs through deeper pockets and along current seams, the majority of the fishing we did (and my personal preference) was casting heavy Gibbs spoons tight to logjams and near side channels. For me, it was one of my first experiences in seeing just how aggressive these fish can be. On many other rivers, my experience has been that your fly or lure has to be down deep, at the fish' level, on a dead drift. On the Kitimat, however, I had good success casting downstream and actually retrieving my spoon up current seams. It is experiences like these on the water - the behaviour of fish, and how each fish seems to have its own individual qualities at times - that really intrigue me. More often that not, you can always come away from a river having learned a lesson if you pay close enough attention...
As for the Skeena, you also have several different options for fishing. One of the most popular ways to angle for Chinook in the big river is to plunk on the bank (also called 'bar fishing') or out of an anchored boat. Back trolling with planers is also an incredibly effective presentation, as is back bouncing. Also, for the upcoming season, we intend on setting out with Spey rods in tow to swing large, bright flies on heavy sink tips and stout tippets to see if we can't entice a 'King' to the fly. We'll be sure to let you know how it goes. Or, why don't you give it a try yourself? Along with prime dates being available, we are also offering a 5% discount off selected week packages. So, if you've ever wanted to try fishing for these impressive game fish, there isn't a better time. Contact Noel anytime for more details...
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River is in great shape right now. She was high and murky earlier in the week but has dropped all week and has cleared up nicely.
Typically the odd Chinook will be caught at the beginning of June and now with better water clarity we should start to see some Chinook caught this weekend. There was a 20lb Chinook lost at the Pump House pool last night.
I have two of my associate guides, Mike and Pat drifting the Kitimat this weekend. They are doing what I call 'homework drifts' in preparation for clients who are booked later this month.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Cosby Smith of Cosby Smith Charters boated a 25lb Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour on Wednesday. Sammy Robinson also reported catching Chinook this week in the Kitimat Harbour.
Ron Macsh reports catching two nice halibut down the Douglas as well as a pretty good bunch of Dungeness Crab. Ron also reports that he has boated five halibut to date this season. Congrats Ron to a great start to your fishing season.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated May 11 – May 18, 2008
(Number 71)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been “extreme” this week. A couple of days of heavy rain and a couple of days of hot weather triggered a snow melt-off from the mountains. Most all of the rivers are very high and not fishable (i.e. Skeena and Zymoetz) now. The only river left in fishable condition is the upper Kalum. It is also very high but the water is relatively clean. From my experience, some of the best Chinook (King) Salmon fishing happens on the Kalum River when the water is high…and high it is today. Most of the isolated coastal streams are high but still fishable. Fishing the “clean seam” of a tributary river where they enter the Skeena is also a good bet (i.e. Exstew, Exchamsiks and Kasiks) under these conditions. Sometimes the BIG Chinook in the main stem Skeena swim into these clean pockets to clean their gills (at least that is the local fishing lore). Lake Trout fishing is good now. Also, might be a good time to consider ocean fishing for Salmon, Halibut, Crab and Prawns. Kind of a plan “B” wouldn’t you think?
And, pardon me for bringing it up again, but my friends and I landed an 83-pound Chinook on the upper Kalum River on May 24, 1983, in high water conditions. This fish changed my life. http://www.noelgyger.ca/articles/Articles-LANDING-A-RECORD-CHINOOK-by-Noel.doc

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of May 11 to March 17/08
Hello Anglers,
Even in high water the best guides can get you into Chinook, pro guide Greg Buck holds the tail square so his client can get a good photo. This is one huge fish!
We are now faced with some very challenging fishing conditions. Earlier in the week, there were severe rainfall warnings for the North Coast, particularly in Prince Rupert and, to a lesser extent, inland areas like Terrace and Smithers. All told, Terrace was supposed to have received 50-60 cm of rainfall which, when combined with two days of hot weather and melting snowpack, has elevated rivers beyond fishable levels. The Skeena is high and dirty, as are most of the tributaries which feed it. Once the meltwater influence has dropped, clean seams on the main channel Skeena will likely be good areas to try for Chinook fishing.
Alternatively, many of the lakes surrounding Terrace start to have excellent trout fishing this time of year, and taking a pontoon or belly boat into hard-to-reach places can provide rewarding fishing.
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: Early this week the Kitimat River was still producing some bright Steelhead particularly in the lower river.
Jesse Houston hooked two Steelhead on the fly Sunday at the Kitimat Hatchery Run. Jesse also landed another one on Tuesday. Alfie Tome landed one on Tuesday May 13th as well. These were bright fish and Jesse reports other bright Steelhead being caught by other anglers.
I had the pleasure of drifting Sunday and Monday with two good friends, Greg Funk and Kelly Auld. We landed four steelhead but Kelly landed the brightest most pristine Steelhead I have seen this season. In my humble opinion Steelhead especially females are truly amongst nature's more beautiful creations. It is always a treat for me to fish with friends who have moved away but return to share the passion of fishing Kitimat River. Thanks for the memories Greg and Kelly.
There seems to be a late run of bright female Steelhead migrating into the lower Kitimat this week. The middle and upper Kitimat is producing the odd bright steelhead, some not so bright and a larger number of kelts. (spawned)
Typically the Steelhead catch tapers off dramatically during this time of year but with the abnormally low water we experienced earlier in the run may have delayed some fish and caused this late surge of fish we are seeing in the lower river.
There was a chinook lost at the pump house on Thursday. Many anglers were anxious to fish for the early Chinook run this May long weekend but we received a healthy amount of rain on Friday followed by some hot weather and the river water level rose 4 1\\2 feet. At the time of writing this report (Sunday morning) the Kitimat remains high but is dropping. The forecast is calling for lower temperatures on Sunday and Monday so hopefully the river will drop enough to fish for the last part of the May long weekend.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: We received reports of a couple chinook caught in the harbour early in the week but a large number of boaters were launching to fish the May long weekend. A favorable forecast and a long weekend is the perfect recipe to enjoy an extended trip down the Douglas Channel. For many local boaters is has become an annual event. Stay Tuned to this report for the results of this weekend's catch.
Good Luck and Good Fishing to all! Ron

This picture proves that there is value in History. Father Jack and daughter Heather Morgan have been guests at Nimmo Bay since 1985.
There are Steelhead fishing again, but paused to once again be immortalized. I have never met a more dedicated father and daughter angling team than the Morgans. They have caught a lot of fish over the years, both Steelhead and Salmon. We should see them for a few more years as they both are in good health and still love to fish.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 27 – May 4, 2008
(Number 69)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week but staying on the cool side. It rained a little but not heavy. The main snow melt-off from the mountains has not started yet. We need warmer weather for that to happen. The water has been coming up slowly all week but is staying in fishable shape on most rivers. This is just what is needed to move in more Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon from the ocean. Conditions are near perfect on some rivers. The Kalum is clean and fishing good. The Zymoetz (Copper) is dirty and in turn is coloring up the Skeena into which it flows. The Kitimat River remains low but the Steelhead fishing is still pretty good. See the Ron Wakita report below for more detail. The Skeena River is borderline fishable and Steelhead are being caught along with some early Chinook fresh from the ocean. This is a good time of year to start doing some bar fishing before the river gets too high. Both fly and spin rods are working well. There is still time to book your trip in May for both Steelhead and Chinook, contact me anytime for available dates and all the fine details of who, what, where, when and why.
When May comes around I cannot help but think of Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kalum River. Actually, this is the time, everything being normal, when you can catch both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. Cast here http://www.noelgyger.ca/articles/Articles-May-2nd-on-the-Kalum-by-Noel.doc to read an article I wrote about on such a day. The guides still have a few days open so if you are interested in booking a trip contact me anytime.
The photo was taken many years ago. I am sorry I cannot recall the name of the young fellow but we all had a great day of fishing for Chinook on the upper Kalum this time of year. It was a family and friends fishing day and I think everyone caught a fish. It doesn’t take long to get the young folk “hooked on fishing” with catches like this.
The upper Kalum River is a non-retention fishery for BIG Chinook. One is allowed to keep a “Jack” which is a small fish under 65 cm up until May 24th. The truth is you don’t catch many small ones. I think this regulation, which has been in effect for many years now, has resulted in the returns of big fish being allowed to grow back to their historical numbers.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 27 to March 3/08
Hello Anglers,
Warming temperatures combined with moderate amounts of rainfall have helped raise water levels in the Skeena and its tributaries. While the Skeena itself is high, dirty, and not easily fishable, some of its tributaries are, and fishing has generally been good over the last week. One of our long time repeat guests, Julian Smith, landed a white chrome 25 lb Chinook, and I’ve heard other reports of even more Chinook being landed. These fresh fish are aggressive and hold one of the greatest opportunities for hooking (but not necessarily landing!) Chinook on the fly during the fishing season.
Steelhead fishing has been superb on a few different coastal rivers that we fish, though access can be a long, laborious task. A ride through the Ocean, timing of the tides and snow are all factors that must be considered, and it wasn’t until last week that we were able to fish some of these gems. However, the wait was very much worth the effort, as guests Martin Walker and Ron Mallory hooked 9 Steelhead in one day and Jeff Bright and Julian Smith hooked 11 Steelhead another day. Jeff Bright has called this time frame “Adventure Steelheading,” which I think is a very suitable name, both for the fish available and the wild spaces they are pursued in…
Jeff Bright jeffbright.com drifts and swings his fly through a bouldery pocket on a remote coastal stream. Though hiking and trudging your way through snow and rocks is almost always a given, the rewards are usually well worth the effort.
After carefully working through a prime run, Jeff Bright jeffbright.com connected with this gorgeous Steelhead. These fish are chrome, fresh from the Ocean, and 'mean.'
The Salmon fry hatch appears to be in full swing now, and all trout species, including Cutthroat, Rainbow, Bulls, and Dolly Varden have been taking advantage of these easy meals. Stripping and swinging fry patterns on a dry line can be a very effective strategy and accounted for several trout yesterday for Dustin.
With Spring Chinook fishing well underway, we are also looking forward to our Trophy Chinook season on the Kitimat and Skeena, from June through late July. This is the time period when, arguably, the largest Chinook in the world ascend these great rivers. If you’ve ever wanted to try landing Salmon that are almost always in control of the fight, fish so large that all they have to do is turn broadside in the current to make your reel scream, this is a season for you. Warmer temperatures and superb fishing make this a popular season, and spaces during prime periods do tend to book quickly. Give Noel a call or email today and you’ll understand why so many clients book with him – not only is he one of the most knowledgeable anglers around, he’ll also be able to put together a package that works with your schedule and needs. Make your casts this Summer with our guides, and you will undoubtedly understand what I mean when I say “tight lines and screaming reels…”
Best of luck on the water…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The lower Kitimat River produced some fresh bright females earlier this week. Aubrey Gerstel from Chetwind who has been fishing the Kitimat Hatchery run most of this week witnessed nine steelhead hooked on Wednesday April 30th with five landed. Four of these were bright females. Aubrey landed two Steelhead on Thursday and exercised his option to retain a hatchery Steelhead. Regulations allow one hatchery steelhead per day may be harvested on the Kitimat River. Once an angler harvests a hatchery steelhead on the Kitimat River he or she must immediately record the steelhead on the back of their fishing license and 'can no longer fish those waters for the remainder of that day'. In simple terms, once you keep a hatchery steelhead you must stop fishing the Kitimat River for the rest of the day.
I drifted on Saturday with Ron Egan and Richard Vello. We hooked seven Steelhead and landed four. Two of these fish were pretty bright, two were a bit colored and one was a kelt (spawned out). The other two we didn't get a good look at. It is typical for this time of year to catch Steelhead in the various colours and stages of the spawning migration.
There were two Chinook caught in the lower Kitimat River this week, one at the Pump House pool. This is a unique time of year when Steelhead and Chinook can be caught on the Kitimat River at the same time. I think when I am finished this fishing report I am going to take my spey rod and join Aubrey down at the Hatchery Run.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Most boaters are crabbing and bottom fishing. Not much has been reported from the Douglas Channel this week. Harbour fishing for Chinook will start very soon.

KITIMAT RIVER:
SAFETY FIRST: Drift boaters are cautioned about the log jam above the Power Lines. It is possible to portage around the log jam but it is somewhat tricky. Smart money says to beach the boat upstream and walk down and take a good look to chart the path first.
The Kitimat River earlier this week dropped to exceptionally low levels. Despite the tougher fishing conditions caused by the low clean water there were some big steelhead caught. There were six steelhead reported this past week which were twenty pounds plus including the steelhead included in this report.
This steelhead was landed by Dave from Smithers last Sunday. I guided Dave when he hooked this beauty. When Dave first set the hook and saw the tail come out of the water we thought that it may have been a Chinook. This was the largest Steelhead that Dave has landed. Congratulations Dave!
The Kitimat River this year has produced bigger than average Steelhead than I have seen in a long time. Vince from the Kitimat Hatchery also has observed similar results. Vince also comments that the brood collection team has caught mostly males with females yet to come. We had some rain on Thursday which caused more Steelhead to move up river. Brian Boudreau and Brian Apps drifted Thursday and hooked seven Steelhead on their drift. Congratulations to Brian and Brian.
It has started to rain as I am writing this report on Saturday and the forecast is for more rain for this weekend. With the rise in the river level should bring more Steelhead into the Kitimat River particularly some females. Stay Tuned! Tight Lines!
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Pat Oliver and Clayton Harker went down the Douglas Channel and managed to catch a small halibut and a bunch of crab. Other boaters were heading out for the weekend and were not returning until Sunday evening. Most were fishing for halibut and crab which is typical for this time of year.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 13 – April 20, 2008
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: It has been mostly cool, cloudy with scattered rain all week but the weekend is very nice. And the water is up – but still clean…yahoo! I guess I can say it now…conditions are near perfect. The guiding clients have been doing very well especially those who book multiple days. Multiple days mean they get to experience different rivers, pools and runs. I was tempted to move the fishing gauge from good to excellent. The Zymoetz (Copper) is clean and fishing on the low end is good. The Kalum is very clean and fishing is very good. With a “bump” of water the Kitimat River is fishing well for Steelhead. See the Ron Wakita report below for more detail. The Skeena River is clean and Steelhead are being caught.
Don’t spread this rumor but we have already caught our first Chinook (King) Salmon on the Kalum River this year. It happened on April 3rd. Sky Richard was the lucky angler. Soon, we may be able to catch both Steelhead and Chinook on the same day. Now that experience will change your life. I know, it changed mine back in 1980.
I have a report of guiding clients “just about” landing a Steelhead on the Kalum River that was estimated to weigh over 25-pounds. It got away before they could get the photo.
I also have a report from my friend Rob Vodola who was fishing with a friend on the Kitimat River after work for a couple of hours and hooked-up with a couple of very fresh Steelhead just in from the ocean. Rob landed his fish a big wild male estimated to weigh over 20-pounds…plus. He said it was the most beautiful Steelhead he had seen this year. Even with the low water the fish are still making it upstream.
Check out a brief report of the day Chad Black and I had on the Kalum on April 18th.

April 18, 2008 Chad Black and I had an opportunity to fish together for a few hours on the Kalum River. Chad's favorite way to fish is with his Spey fly rod. He is a pro fly caster. It didn't take him very long to catch his Steelhead (see: Photo of the Week) and what a fresh fish it was, bright and clean. It must have just come in from the ocean this spring. I managed to shoot some video and still shots.
Did I say, I caught a Steelhead also. I caught mine spinning with a light silver spoon. Chad shot some video and stills also with his camera…so check back early next week when I will have had a chance to edit and post it on the website. We also caught Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char. It was just a GREAT day fishing.
Both our fish were females Chad’s estimated to weigh 10-12 and mine 12-14-pounds.
Chad gave me some very good Spey Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques on video (soon to be posted)…stay tuned…it is only going to get better.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 13 to April 19/08
Hello Anglers,
The prevailing low, clear water conditions on the Skeena and its tributaries changed last week as rainfall and snowmelt inundated rivers. Though the Skeena has a little more colour to it, it has been fishing well during the past week, and some very fresh Steelhead have been caught there. Other rivers have redeveloped their natural glacial colour, which Steelhead seem to feel more at home in. Though the fishing has been a little spottier than in previous weeks, the Steelhead are still in the rivers in good numbers, and the game is more about finding aggressive fish. Guests at the lodge last week hooked into several Steelhead on the fly, ranging from large bucks with prominent red stripes, to white chrome fish with a hint of pink in their cheeks. Another group of Italian anglers who were guided by Greg and Dustin experienced some great fishing on light spoons cast to deep, swirly pools.
The next week is forecast to be a warm sunny one, which will hopefully continue to melt snow and raise river levels. An increase in water levels will no doubt bring more fresh fish into the Skeena system which, as water temperatures rise, will be very strong fighters. And perhaps most striking, the warmer weather will allow us to access some of our favourite remote coastal Steelhead rivers. These are creeks and small rivers where 20 lb Steelhead can be sight fished as they hold behind large boulders in clear water. More on this adventure next week…
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER:
Anyone drifting the Kitimat River please beware of the log jam above Powerlines!
The Kitimat River water level went up earlier this week due to some rain we had last weekend. With the rise in the water the Steelhead catch rates were pretty good earlier in the week through out the river particularly in the upper end. The higher water levels encouraged more Steelhead into the river and also caused more Steelhead to migrate up river. I managed to land one on Sunday and another on Monday evening. Tuesday evening after work I was fishing with Francis Timmons from Quebec and he managed to land another one in the upper river. Pat Oliver also landed one about 18lbs. on Wednesday up river. Many other Steelhead anglers reported good success as well.
After the rain stopped and with continuing colder temperatures the river has dropped steadily during the latter part of this week and the catch rates have dropped off in the upper river. The lower cleaner water level has created more challenging conditions although Randy Marshall of Randy's River Guiding reported landing a 12lber with his client on Saturday.
There seems to be more Steelhead holding in the lower drift and the wider deeper Steelhead runs in the lower portion of the Kitimat has produced more fish. One drift boat has reported hooking five Steelhead landing three in the lower drift on Friday. We have some higher than average tides in the next few days which should help bring some fresh Steelhead into the Kitimat. I suspect that the higher tides will bring more fresh Steelhead into the Kitimat River but the lower river level will cause them to hold in the lower portion. To test this theory I plan to drift the lower portion tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: We have experienced some high winds in the Douglas Channel which has caused little to no activity. Accordingly not much to report from the Douglas Channel.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 6 – April 13, 2008
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: It has been mostly cool, cloudy with scattered rain all week. I never thought I would say I hope it rains but we really do need something to get the water levels up. I had a good look at the rivers and it appears they have started to come up. The Zymoetz (Copper) actually got dirty, not surprising for this river. I guess if we had a streak of hot weather that would do it and down will come the snow pack from the mountains. Savvy fishermen and fishing guides have figured out how to keep the bite going for Steelhead despite the low water conditions.
Speaking of savvy guides check out a report from host Jeff Bright and guide Dustin Kovacvich below:
Jeff says, “I'm happy to come to you with a glowing report from my first visit to the Skeena and Nicholas Dean Lodge this year. Guest Martin Walker and I found near-perfect conditions and good numbers of willing fish, including one heavy buck that taped out to 22-23 pounds. Also, encouraging was the number of large, bright female fish. Hopefully, this will translate into a productive spawn and forecasts strong runs this summer and fall.” Photo credits: Jeff Bright. Check out the full trip report at http://www.jeffbright.com/travel/tripreports/08_mar.html
BOAT RAMP Fishermen’s Park boat ramp on the lower Kalum River is now open. The parking lot has been graded. Everything is in good shape.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of April 6 to April 12/08
Hello Anglers,
It seems as though we’re finally starting to receive some of the rains more commonly associated with the early Spring season. Though it might make the fishing experience a little wetter and colder, the change in conditions is a positive one for waking up lethargic fish and bringing in fresh “chromers” from the large waters of the Skeena. The fishing for the guests at our lodge during the past week has also reflected this. On their first day of fishing, Mike Kenyon and Yvonne Williams had a fantastic outing – all in all, hooking several Steelhead on the fly. See Photo of the Week. Perhaps even more significant, the last pool of the day actually surrendered two Steelhead – at the same time! Double headers are one of those rare feats in Steelhead fly fishing that simply don’t happen very often, and I’m sure that Mike and Yvonne will remember this day for a long time to come.
For those of you who might remember, Yvonne was the lucky angler to have hooked and landed the largest Steelhead seen at the lodge last year. The fish was conservatively estimated at 27-28 lbs, a monstrous fish. For Yvonne, there was another fish that “got away” this year, having wrapped her line and leader around a large midstream log, a fish so large she figured it was similar in size to last year’s fish. Paying your dues in Steelhead fishing is sometimes a lesson that needs to be learned, albeit the hard way, but the rewards are almost always worth the effort…
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels…

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: With the weather staying colder the Kitimat River remained very low. Some anglers commented that we needed a little rain to bump the river level up to encourage more Steelhead into the river. We received snow Friday morning and it changed to rain and has rained well into Saturday. The river is looking good with the higher water and more Steelhead should be migrating up the river. Al Skender and his fishing partner hooked three Steelhead Thursday morning landing two. Ariel Kuppers landed a 16lb. Steelhead Saturday morning. He also landed a pretty nice Dolly Varden. Many other steelhead have been reported.
Driftboaters are cautioned about the log jam above Powerlines. Mike Herzberz who took the picture of the log jam (included with this report) comments that 'it would be very difficult to portage around the log jam'. Thanks Mike. Good Luck! Tight Lines!
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Not a lot to report from the Douglas Channel which is typical for this time of year. Most boaters are de-winterizing their boats in preparation for the upcoming season. The boaters that are venturing are mostly crabbing and doing a little bottom fishing.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 30 – April 6, 2008
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week. I guess spring has finally arrived. The water on all the rivers is still extremely low. The Steelhead fishing is very slow on some of the rivers and fair to good on others. The trick now is to know where the Steelhead are holding and adjust your terminal tackle accordingly (small) and fish un-spooked water. And if you hook a fish…rest the pool. I guess a bonus is that the fishing pressure is light. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. A few fishermen are starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. I went fishing with a couple of friends today on the Kalum River, check out my report below.

NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges.

KITIMAT RIVER:

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean.
KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat. I have heard of one jet-boat smashing the bottom pretty good in a shallow rocky tail-out.
- April 6, 2008. Hugh Ormerod, Rod Vodola and I went fishing on the Kalum today. We were the only boat on the river. The water is very, very low and we could only fish one good pool. That pool was kind to us as we each landed a Steelhead. Mine was a big male in very good shape around 17-20-pounds. Rob’s fish was a bright female around 16-pounds. Hugh’s fish was a small male around 5-pounds. We hooked at least six Steelhead and landed three in a very short day. We started at 9 AM and finished at noon. We also hooked a few Cutthroat Trout and Dolly Varden. So the action was good considering the conditions. I shot a video clip of Rob’s fish and will edit and post it on the website soon. I also got some great still photos. This is the lowest water level (for this time of year) I have ever seen on the Kalum in all the years I have been fishing it. The water is usually at least three to four feet higher and a dark green colour. Oh well, nothing we can do about conditions, just adjust to them.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Fishing there has been good.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of March 30 to April 5/08
Hello Anglers,
We’ve been very fortunate to have some great weather during the last few weeks, but the downside is that rivers have become very low and clear, making fishing a little more difficult. In many places on the Skeena and its tributaries, it is now possible to wade in tail outs and riffles that you wouldn’t think of trying in normal conditions.
Still, more fresh fish are arriving weekly to complement the Summer, Fall and Winter run fish, and when the prevailing conditions change – either a little more colour in the rivers, or higher flows, or both – the fishing will follow suit. Despite the conditions, it was a great weekend to get out fishing and a friend and I spent the weekend swinging large flies on sink tips in some fantastic water, all the while practicing our casting. Doing a little recon when the water is low will also help you understand where the lies are and why, which will invariably help later on…
We were also pleasantly surprised to run into Noel, Rob and Hugh on the river this morning and it was great to hear that they had run into a few nice Steelhead. I have to say that I was a little envious, but realize that I just have to pay my dues, and wait for the next pull. It’s only a matter of time…
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels,
Chad Black

Fishing Report from: Kalum River Lodge for the Week of March 30 to April 5/08
Hey everyone how’s it going? Me and Andrew did a 1/2 day drift on the upper Kalum River today (April 2nd) and hooked 5, but only landed 2. Water is clear, cold, but the fish fight like %^$^! Great water to get them on the fly! Here are the pics I took with Andrew holding the fish, what a great half day. Wish you were here!!! Take care. Tony
CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: Spring is here but the reminders of the unusually harsh winter that we had are still apparent. The mornings still have a bite of cold with the odd morning still producing some frost on the ground. The enormous snow pack on the mountains is a constant reminder of the amount of snow we received this winter. The temperature of the next few months and accordingly, the rate of snow melt will have a major influence on the fishing conditions that we will have to deal with.
Early in this year's Steelhead season with the temperature staying colder than normal, the Kitimat River has stayed very low and clear. The low river conditions have slowed the migration of fish into the river and most of the steelhead that have been reported are in the lower river. There were three steelhead landed on the Island across from the hatchery and the Lower Dike has produced both Steelhead and some trout this weekend. Steelhead are reported to be spotty in the upper river by most anglers but two fly fishers said they had an outstanding day on Thursday. John said 'with the low clear water the steelhead were pretty spooky but were able to do really good swinging a fly'.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There were some herring reported in the harbour this week but only for a short time. A twenty pound Chinook was reported caught trolling in front of Eurocan on Wednesday but we still have not spoken to the lucky boater.
Crab and halibut are also the focus of boaters. Tidal water anglers are again reminded to be aware of the changes to the halibut quotas.
