Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been fair all week. Maybe spring is finally getting a grip on itself. The spring melt-off on the mountains has not started yet. Despite the low water conditions the “best” fishing guides are doing quite well for their clients. The Tracey Hittel report below is outstanding. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape and water is very low, almost too low for jet boats so its drift boat and raft time. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod. Most of the ice that was floating in the river has melted. A few fishermen are now starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:
TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD
LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 24.3-pound Steelhead. Angler: Client of Tracey Hittel Where: Kalum River
WEATHER: Cloudy. A few flurries over northern sections early this morning. 40 percent chance of rain showers or flurries this afternoon. High plus 4. Sunrise 7:14 AM Sunset 8:04 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 10 degrees. Minimum 0 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: 'Mission Accomplished'!. Jesse Houston and Ariel Kuppers have been on a mission for the past three weeks to catch a steelhead and it happened for Jesse on Tuesday. Jesse landed his first Steelhead of the year March 25th which Ariel estimated to be about 16lbs. (See Photo of the Week - above) 'Jesse caught one last year on March 25th' said Ariel, 'Same date this year'. They also hooked 11 trout and 7 landed the same day. They landed three of the trout on a fly, the muddler minnow with a silver tinsel body.
Many other anglers have been reporting similar results for trout but Jesse's Steelhead was the only one we recorded this week. Many trout fishermen commented that they were catching trout in runs that they had fished numerous times this winter but this week these same runs produced fish. I am a strong believer that the temperature of the water has a major influence on the fishing results for Trout and Steelhead. With the warmer temperatures we received all week and the Kitimat River was a lot more productive. Since the news of Jesse's Steelhead and the pictures circulating, more anglers are planning to be out on the Kitimat River this weekend. The Kitimat River is very low and anglers are able to walk and wade most portions of the entire river. The pools and deeper pockets that will be holding fish are clearly defined so anglers should be able to find fish easier. We will soon see! Stay tuned for next week's report. Ron Wakita
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Rick Taylor caught some King Crab down the channel last weekend! Pretty exciting as these are the first King Crab reported this year. Other boaters were also out catching Dungeness Crab and some boaters were just out test driving their boats after the winter hibernation. We did not receive any reports of any feeder Chinook last weekend. The herring migration seems to be a little erratic this year and accordingly so has the 'Winter Chinook fishery'. It may be a result of 'climate change' or simply the unpredictability of Mother Nature. The forecast is calling for continued warmer temperatures so this may cause a late migration of Winter Springs.
Salt Anglers are reminded that the 2009/2011 Synopsis is now available. Please note that the Halibut quota for Area 6 is one per day with two in possession.

The Bites On Fishing Report for March 29, 2009
Fishing Season is finally here and the weather patterns for the north coast are providing far better conditions for Steelhead / Trout fishermen venturing out on local rivers. Kitimat River is still very low. The snow melt in the higher levels will soon bring a needed rise in water levels and create better fishing conditions throughout the river systems.
A few Steelhead caught over the last week as well as good number of Cutthroats.
Harbor fishing is still slow with only a few early boaters trying to hook up some feeder Chinooks and load up on a feast of Crab.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven
Hi Noel, here is a quick report: I just started guiding on the Kalum River. Day1 of week 1, 6 landed this one 19.5 lbs calculated, Rod Toth of Bent Rods Jigs, Chilliwack BC, also day 2 with 6 fish females one with sea lice so some new fish pushing in, water temps still 36F.
Another 1 today 21.4 lbs , 3 days 1 fish 19.6, another 17 and then the 21.4 what a 3 day trip, will send more pics just doing a download.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: March 21st is supposed to be the first day of Spring but the snow continues to fall in the Kitimat area. Earlier this week the afternoon sun had warmed up the temperature and with the blue skies we started to sense the feeling of Spring but light snowfalls interrupted the transition of seasons.
Last weekend Donny Webber and his fishing partner caught 'a bunch of trout in Nalabila Creek'. Actually this stretch of water is no longer Nalabila Creek. With the change in the river flow it is now the main stem of the Kitimat River. I have heard it referred to as 'Nalabila Arm'
More anglers are starting to venture out. During the week trout fishing was spotty despite the increased traffic. There were no Steelhead reported this week, I suspect the colder temperatures may have had an influence. The river conditions are really good as the water level is low and clear but the water temperature remains low. Sometimes fishing is better in the warm of the afternoon sun, a couple degrees warmer can increase activity of the fish.
We were all hoping that the Steelheading would start earlier this year and after the first couple of Steelhead were reported everyone got ``fired up``. No Steelhead to report this week but we endeavor to report the results as accurately as they are and not what we hope them to be.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Very few boats are venturing out to fish for Feeder Chinook although the herring have been reported in the Kitimat Harbour. I spoke to one boater who went out crabbing and caught his limit of Dungeness crab but he didn't set up any rods for trolling.
I spoke to Wes Owens and a couple of other boaters who were planning to get out trolling this weekend so hopefully we will have some results to report shortly.

The Bites On Fishing Report with Nautical West Sport Fishing: for week of March 22, 2009
Hi Noel, This week has brought some new hope for us in Northern British Columbia as the temps have been slowly on the increase and the weather patterns are gradually starting to change.
I spoke with a few steelhead fishermen this week in Terrace and in Kitimat and fishing is still slow with better results in the Kalum River thus far. The Kitimat River is starting to see an increase in number of local fishermen putting in time with hopes of hooking a few of the early running Steelhead. Cutthroat numbers are showing in the lower sections as these fish are feeding on fry coming downstream.
This time of year can be very exciting hooking into numerous catches of cutthroat on a dry line and minnow pattern. As temperatures start to rise over the next couple of weeks we will be seeing far better fishing conditions and of course an increase of Steelhead entering the system.
The Kitimat Harbor has been slow with only a few winter feeders being caught. A good time to do some crab fishing and lay out a few prawn traps.
Nautical West is gearing up for our season right now and prepping the vessels for launch here in the first weeks of April.

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been pretty good all week. Guiding on the Kalum River has started as of today, March 15th. The guides and their clients should be really happy as the water is in excellent shape there are lots of Steelhead in the river now. Both fly and spin methods should work well. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is open to Steelhead fishing. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. Lots of new stuff posted on the website this week.
Our rivers, oceans and our fish are in peril. Our governments, Federal and Provincial, are very slow to react to protect them therefore we need to take action ourselves whenever we can.
I usually don’t comment on the conservation items posted as they speak for themselves but I am alarmed that there are three postings this week! I really hope you all can find the time to read them all. I would like to draw to your attention to one particular posting. WEATHER: Cloudy. 60 percent chance of flurries this morning and of rain showers this afternoon. High plus 4. Sunrise 7:49 AM Sunset 7:37 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 8 degrees. Minimum -1 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: The winter weather continues as we received hefty snowfalls on Wednesday and Thursday night. We usually don't have to shovel our driveways in March but this year snow continues to fall and we continue to shovel. Such is life in the North West.
Despite the snowfalls in the middle of the week Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston were out fishing for Steelhead on the Kitimat River. Jesse lost a Steelhead last week when they were fishing for trout so they geared up this week with Steelhead tackle. This week while fishing for Steelhead Jesse landed two Cutthroat Trout. They didn't catch the Steelhead they were looking for this week but at least they caught the trout they were looking for last week.
Ariel was a little 'pumped up' to catch Steelhead because he was talking to a biologist in
our tackle store. This biologist who is conducting a Eulachon study on the Kitimat was netting the lower river for Eulachon when he caught a bright, chrome 18lb. Steelhead in his net. After hearing this biologist describing this beautiful Steelhead Ariel was pretty 'pumped' and so was I. Only people that fish can relate to the emotions of the hardcore angler. Such is life in the North West.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: I was speaking to Bill (sorry I forgot his last name) who caught two feeder Chinook last weekend in the Kitimat Harbour. 'I caught them right in front of MK Marina' said Bill who appeared pretty proud of his catch. 'I caught them on the Old Stand-by Lure? Bill said pausing for me to guess. I responded, 'With Luhr Jensen's Tom Mack #5 50/50' (which is half chrome and half brass). Bill said, 'No I was using a Tom Mack #5 straight chrome'. I corrected him stating that the Old Stand-by was the Tom Mack #5 50/50 and that the Tom Mack #5 chrome was the Old Stand-by's twin brother. He insisted that the chrome was the 'Old Stand-by'. Only anglers can get into a debate over specific details of which lure is better or which specific fishing holes are better, or which boat is better, or which rod and so on. Most debates among anglers are seldom settled. My official scoring on this issue is that the Tom Mack #5 50/50 is the 'Old Stand-by' but the Tom Mack #5 chrome was the lure on record for Bill's catch last weekend. Congratulations on your catch Bill. Such is life in the North West.

KITIMAT RIVER: We are still receiving the odd snowfalls. There has not been enough snow that temperatures have been warmer, in fact during most afternoons this week the sun has come out requires shoveling but enough to remind us that it is still winter. Despite the snow the and created some very nice days to be out fishing.
Trout fishing on the Kitimat continues to be good especially during the warmth of the afternoon sun. A local fly fisherman was talking to Ariel Kuppers in our tackle store said that he landed ten trout on minnow patterns in Hirsch Creek.
Ariel and another staff member of our tackle store, Jesse Houston went out fishing on Wednesday and Jesse hooked but lost a Steelhead.
We received another report earlier this week of another steelhead landed although this info was second or third hand. News of the odd steelhead being hooked has tweaked some excitement and has caused a few anglers to start organizing their tackle. We have some in-store specials to help start the season. Steelheading on the Kitimat usually starts later into March and will get better every day especially if the temperature continues to get warmer. The challenge for this year's season will be searching for new hot spots as there have been significant changes to the river over the winter. Anglers should beware during the first few drifts to be on the watch for these major changes. The most significant change is in the Sawmill to Nalabila area. We will report other changes as they become more exposed as the snow melts.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There was only one twelve pound feeder chinook reported early in the week. There have been increasing numbers of Sea Gulls, Seals and Sea Lions sighted in the harbour. These are signs that the herring are starting to migrate into the harbour to spawn. When herring come into harbour usually feeder chinook follow and the Kitimat Harbour winter chinook fishery should pick up. I spoke to Wes Owens and some other boaters who were planning to fish this weekend but we have no results to report at this time. Stay tuned to this report for updates. Good luck to all, Ron Wakita

Hello Anglers, I hope this newsletter finds you all doing well and pursuing your fishing addictions with rod and reel. Though there are a variety of reasons why, I must unfortunately report that my fishing adventures have been much too few and far between. This would, in all likelihood, explain why I've been experiencing this nagging twitch every now and again - cabin fever is certainly getting the best of me! Kidding aside, my lack of fishing has translated into some much needed time at my fly tying vise, and dreaming of those picture perfect days on the river. A day where I can feel the warmth of the sun as it rises over the mountain peaks, and sense my homemade Intruder fly, most likely the fishy two-tone pink colour that worked so well last Fall, as it swims its way through the deep slot in front of me. The tug of a Winter Steelhead -whether it's the smashing grab of an aggressive buck, or a simple tightening of the line- is one that I think of often, but do not necessarily need for a successful day on the river. Simply spending time on the water on one's favourite run, making long, graceful casts to the far bank, and smelling a forest coming to life after a long, cold winter are some of the other great experiences that Steelhead fishing offers. Witnessing the sound of a reel as it screams in protest under the pull of a strong fish, and admiring a chrome bright fish brought to hand isn't all that bad either...
Thankfully, Winter seems to be loosening its grip in the Lower Skeena valley, giving way to warmer Spring conditions. Though it's still possible to get those rogue snowstorms in this part of the country as late as early April, the general trend is for warming temperatures and longer daylight hours. Translation: better Steelhead fishing conditions. After a long, cold winter, water temperatures are just a few degrees above freezing and Steelhead can be very sluggish on the Skeena and its tributaries, but as these temperatures increase, so too does the activity of Steelhead.
So, based on the present conditions, what do I anticipate for the early season? Because the Spring season through late March and early May sees some of the most reliable, consistent water flows over the course of the Steelheader’s year, and the bulk of the Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring run fish are holding in classic runs and pools, I expect the fishing to be good. On our favorite local river, in most cases, we don't have to guess whether there are Steelhead in a particular run, or not. We know they're there. It just depends on the mood of the fish that day, and if you have the fly or lure that that particular Steelhead wants. Moreover, reports from regional biologists have suggested that when a river's Summer and Fall Steelhead runs are strong, this often correlates with Winter and Spring run fish as well. Given that the 2008 Steelhead run was one of the better ones in the last 5 years suggests that this Spring should provide reliable fishing.
Plus, the last few days that our guides have been out fishing could best be described as 'epic.' Sky Richard and Cam Thiessen floated a wilderness river a few weeks ago using pontoon boats and Abel crafts, which enabled them to reach waters seldom fished this Winter, and the results were worth the extra effort. Cam landed 3 Steelhead, ranging from chrome bright to lightly coloured, and Sky landed 6 of the 10 Steelhead he hooked. A week later, Dustin landed 2 Steelhead out of the 4 he hooked in a mere 3 hours of spey fishing. One was a smaller hen of 7-8 lbs, and the second of the two bright fish were 14 lbs. With water conditions only improving as we approach our March 22 Spring opener, we look forward to another great season ahead as we provide the very best in guided fishing adventures in Northwestern BC.

Hello Noel, Mandi and I were out on the Kitimat yesterday just checking out all the changes mother nature has made to “HER” river. It is really something how the river can move. It was a very nice day with a spring like feel to it. The water was a little low but fishable, was nice just to get out and wet a line. We did not have a touch however it was more a walk down a new section of water just doing my homework for the guests that are showing up this spring.

SUMMARY: It has been cold at the beginning of the week but is finally warming up for the weekend. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. The Kalum River opens up to guiding on March 15th. There are still a few spots open. I have heard the Steelhead fishing is very good. I hear a rumour spring is on its way!

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: Angler: Where: (none reported this week)
WEATHER: Periods of snow and blowing snow. Amount 2 to 4 cm. Windy. High minus 1. Sunrise 7:23 AM Sunset 6:10 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 4 degrees. Minimum -3 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: For most of the week we have had clear days with blue skies. We are still receiving cold winter temperatures but anglers have been able to get out and fish for trout on the Kitimat River and her tributaries. Trout fishing has been productive for Jody Dennill, a local hardcore trout fisherman. He said 'I have been catching quite a few on a fly'. Ariel Kuppers, who works in our tackle store, was talking to another Fly fisherman who said he was hooking most of his trout on minnow patterns. He also said that he has been doing really good fishing in Hirsch Creek.
Other trout anglers have been using dew worms as their lure of choice. Worms are usually the most productive lure for trout on the Kitimat River.
We just received a pretty good snowfall last night and it still snowing so hopefully it won't continue for too much longer.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Wes Owens of Golden Adventures was out in the Kitimat Harbour fishing for Winter Chinook earlier in the week and although he didn't catch any he watched a boat in front of him land two nice chinook. Wes estimated the fish to be 10 to 12-pounds which are a typical size for these feeder chinook although we have recorded winter chinook over thirty pounds in the past.
I spoke to another boater in our tackle store who said that he lost a pretty good size chinook because his leader broke. He admitted that he had not checked his leaders before he put them out. After his mishap he retied his leaders but was not able to attract another fish during the rest of the trip. The important lesson to be learned is to always check your line, leaders and tackle before you fish with them.

Hi Noel, Pierce Clegg and I were out scouting for some fresh fish it is still just a little cold.
Here’s what we were up to this week just out sniffing around for some fresh steelies. They must be still eating and growing in the Ocean we never had a touch. Just on the edge the weather will break and they will make a run for it, I can’t wait to swing my fly through a perfect run and feel that tug and the line peel off. It has been a long winter and I am ready for spring!
Regarding the fish guiding, there are only a few spots open for the best steelheading on earth!
The spring steelhead season offers everything the summer-run does without the crowds or the gill net fishing fleet intercepting our fish. The fish are bright chrome and only migrate short distances on beautiful coastal rivers. They are every bit as aggressive as the summer-run and carry more weight as they have not swum 300 miles or more.
If you have any questions please contact Noel and he will hook you up with a guide that knows the unclassified waters in Region 6 as there are more unclassified rivers than classified. Wouldn’t you like to fish something new? Adventure is what drives us to fish. Gill McKean

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Winter still has a grip on us although the temperatures are getting a little warmer. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also. I think more and more fisher people with “cabin fever” are thinking about getting out and wetting a line for some late winter Steelhead, weather permitting, of course.
A couple of my friends and I wanted to fish on Saturday but the weather turned bad, with light rain and nasty winds gusting to around 90km per hour. Maybe we will try again on Monday.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The keener anglers in the area continue to fish when the weather permits but the hardcore are fishing even when the winter weather is extreme. In the northwest we can receive snow, ice rain, high winds and sunny periods all in the same day. We had a bunch of these hardcore types gearing up with dew worms for the weekend. Early this week we had a fair amount of rain which dirtied up the river a bit but the river is dropping and may clean up for the weekend. We can always dress for the weather conditions but there is little we can do if the river is dirty. Stay tuned as I will report this weekend's results in next weeks report.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Similar to the situation on the Kitimat River where there are trout to be caught if and when weather and conditions will allow, the Douglas Channel has winter Chinook to be caught if and when boaters are able can get out to. The number one consideration for the Salt water anglers is the wind. We have experienced some strong winds which has reduced fishing opportunities this week. The other issue of the Kitimat harbour fishery has been the dirty water produced by the Kitimat River. With the Kitimat River dropping and calmer winds many of the keener boaters are anxious to get out.

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Winter still has a grip on us although the temperatures are getting warmer. It is still too cold for me but the young guys are getting out and catching lots of fish I have been told. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also.

WEATHER: Snow becoming mixed with rain this afternoon. Snowfall amount 5 to 10 cm except 15 cm near Stewart. High plus 2. Sunrise 8:23 AM Sunset 5:13 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 1 degrees. Minimum -2 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Environment Canada taped messages constantly updated, giving current conditions and three-day forecasts. Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. The spots that are open can have some drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are still difficult to access.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape today, with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is difficult. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

KITIMAT RIVER: I apologize for the lapse in Fishing Reports for the Kitimat area but there has not been a lot to report. I have also been very busy coaching my son, Corey's hockey. Such is life in the Northwest.
We are having a very severe winter season. In fact as I write this report there is a deer walking down the middle of our street. This is a common occurrence in the outskirts of town but I live in the middle of Kitimat's residential area. This is a sign that even the deer are struggling with this winter's conditions.
There have some ice fishing opportunities for the hard core anglers. Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston fought some rainbow trout in Onion Lake. Onion Lake is a small lake located right next to the highway midway between Kitimat and Terrace.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Tom Blake a local boater drove down to MK Bay Marina last weekend to check his boat. As he looked out at the harbour he watched a boat land two feeder chinook right in front of the marina. He came into our tackle store to buy some bait and went back out to the marina and took his boat out trolling. He also managed to land a Winter spring.
If anglers are willing to brave the elements and get out and do some fishing there are fish to be caught.

Hello Anglers,
For the die hard angler who likes to pursue his or her addiction, this winter has not been a good one. For most of December, a cold snap where temperatures reached lows of -25 C was commonplace, making skating and ice hockey a much better and more successful pursuit than river fishing. January snowstorms blanketed Terrace in several feet of snow on numerous occasions and even getting to the river has been a difficult proposition! This is not to say that ice fishing isn't an option - it is, and I've heard some good reports of Cutthroat being caught - but my personal preference would be for catching up on some much needed fly tying to fill the holes in my fly boxes, and dream of days to come where I can launch a long cast over favourite pools, and anticipate the excitement of the grab.
It's also a time for us to reflect back on the fishing we had in 2008, and look forward to the 2009 season. Actually, when sitting down to weigh through my options for a photo for this week's report, I had a difficult time trying to decide which one to choose, owing to the great photos taken by our clients and guides. However, I finally decided to use a photo of Randy Marshall's (of Randy's River Guiding) giant Chinook that he landed in mid July with one of our guides, Greg Buck, for the simple fact that it's a massive fish. At 70 lbs, it's the biggest Chinook I've ever seen, and the story of how this fish was caught only makes it that much more impressive.
Back in the early Summer last year, water conditions were prime on the Skeena from late June all through the month of July during the typical peak Chinook fishing period, and Greg and his son Josh took advantage of this by being on the water nearly everyday. On this particular day, they had been backtrolling on the Skeena River near Terrace with some success, and Randy Marshall decided to join them around mid day. Instead of making their usual backtrolling runs down the river, they decided to back bounce slowly down the river, targeting the deep pools of the Skeena where Chinook like to hold. Having tried back bouncing last year with Dustin, I can say with all honesty that it takes a bit of getting used to, and that my ability to detect strikes needs a little work. Essentially, you attach a heavy lead weight (or lead substitute) to your line via a three way swivel, along with a big chunk of roe and a fluorescent coloured cheater, and you lift and drop this rig off the bottom as the current pushes you downriver. Takes can be very light, so you have to be very attentive - sometimes the only thing you'll feel is your line going slack on the way down.
After starting to back bounce down a favourite run on the Skeena, Randy hooked into what felt like a large fish. Large Chinook have a tendency to test the limits of even heavy action rods and level wind reels, and this fish was no exception. After several large head shakes, the fish sounded and peeled off line as it used the flow of the Skeena to its advantage. To give them the best chance of landing this fish, Greg expertly maneuvered the boat downriver, following the fish, until he was able to find a good location on shore to get out. Once there, Randy was able to apply enough pressure to tire the fish and work him into the shallows. With what I'm sure was a triumphant moment, Greg netted the fish in one scoop before the fish had a chance to head back to the middle of the river. Afterwards, Greg told me that the fish was so large it was difficult to fit in the net! As they set about taking a few photos of the fish prior to its release, they realized that they were even more fortunate to have landed this fish after inspecting the mouth. Apparently, a large, silver hook was still imbedded in its giant mouth, likely a remnant of a Commercial Salmon fisherman's lines, and caught within the eye of this hook, was Randy's 4/0 Gamakatsu! Now, when you sit down and think of the odds of catching a fish this size, this feat almost defies logic. I mean, what are the chances that after a Chinook made a move for your bait, that you were able to catch the eye of another hook - and have this hook stay in place? I'm sure that Greg, Randy, and Nelson Furtado (the photographer) will not forget this fish anytime soon...
On the heels of a great Chinook season in 2008, we expect the 2009 season to be a fantastic one as well. Whether you prefer to back troll down the mighty Skeena (or back bounce!), or casting spoons on the Kitimat, you can be sure that some of the largest Chinook in the world will be ascending our rivers. Of course, if you're a fly angler looking to hook into these great game fish on the fly, we do have several options for you as well, including fishing on a remote, intimate wilderness river that holds fish up to 70 lbs. Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Considering it is still winter the weather has been good all week and temperatures mostly above freezing. The snow is melting and access to the rivers is getting easier. Both the upper and lower Kalum and lower Zymoetz (Copper) Rivers are open to Steelhead fishing. I have heard the ice fishing in our local lakes is pretty good also. Scroll down to see some very nice winter Steelhead photos from this winter sent to me from other fishermen. The cold winter days did not stop these young fellows from going fishing.

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Happy New Year everyone! The extreme cold weather has gone away but it is still very cold and we have had a good dump of snow. The “determined” fishermen are still getting out there. Some would say they’re “crazy”! The Zymoetz (Copper) River closes to angling above the sign at the transmission line crossing (below Zymoetz Canyon) at the end of the month (January 1 to June 15). So get out and enjoy before the closure. To be clear just the upper reaches of the river are closed one still may angle on the very low end, just make sure you fish below the boundary at the first canyon. The Kalum River is open to angling all winter although access to some pools is difficult as to the extreme low water and snow. The Kitimat River is open all winter also and if we get some warmer weather fishing for Trout should be OK.

WEATHER: Flurries. Amount 5 to 10 cm. Temperature steady near minus 5. Max. Temp -1 degrees C. Min. Temp. -6 degrees C. Sunrise 8:57 AM Sunset 4:16 PM

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean. Frozen over in spots. And the spots that are open can be full of drifting ice. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch if you can “brave” the weather.
KALUM RIVER: is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well…but too cold to fish right now.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The water is in poor shape today, with moderate to heavy ice flows and fishing for Steelhead is poor. Just a little too cold. The upper section closes at the end of the month (December 31) but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

Hello Noel,
I've been meaning to send this to you for over a month, hear is one of the largest if not the largest beautiful Steelhead I've ever landed. It saved the trip for me due to the fact that the first five or six fish I hooked throughout the trip either became unbuttoned or my line broke trying to us a ferruled leader. Without my fishing buddies Mike & Brad along that day this might have become a distant memory of what might have been. Fish like this will keep me coming back until my knees won't hold me stable in that glorious natal waters of the greatest fish that swims. Take care Noel and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy Birthday to you my friend with many more to follow. .

WATER CONDITIONS: Skeena is in good shape. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in good shape. The Kalum, Kitimat and smaller coastal streams are all in good shape.

SKEENA RIVER: is in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon may be slow as most runs have gone through although some Steelhead winter over in the main stem. Most of these good runs are found upstream from Terrace in the Skeena 4 section. Some sections have chunks of floating ice and snow.
KALUM RIVER: is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: We have received some clear sunny days with blue skies this week. Jody Dennill, a long time Kitimat resident, had a couple of really good days of trout fishing during the good weather. Jody was using both worms and roe.
Fly fishing has also been productive as trout have migrated into most of the tributaries and creeks of the Kitimat system. Hirsh and Humphry's creek have been the most productive. Egg and minnow patterns continue to be the more productive fly patterns.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been a few boats fishing the Kitimat Harbour this week but we did not receive any reports of any fish caught. We did hear that crabbing was very good and 'all the shells were very full', said Alain.
This weekend is forecasting calm waters and blue skies so hopefully more boaters will get out and find the winter springs. Good luck to all. Ron Wakita
